TTTTTD JAMES S. DUFFY, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
LEVEL.
ressent.
To all ifi/om 'it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES S. DUFFY, citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the count-y of Peoria and State of Tllinois, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Levels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in levels, and particularly to that type of device used by carpenters, mechanics and other workmen generally.
The principal object of my invention is the provision of a device of this character which is small in compass and may be readily attached to and detached from larger instruments with which it is adapted to be used, as for instance a straight-edge or square.
A further object is the provision in such a device of means for readily adjusting the same and means whereby the same may be attached in a correct position.
To the accomplishment of the foregoing and such other objects as may hereafter appear, my invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of the parts and details hereafter described and sought to be defined in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof and which show merely for the purpose of illustrative disclosure preferred embodiments of my invention, it being understood however, that various changes may be made in the construction and arrangement of the parts and details within the sco-pe of the appended claims without digressing from my inventive idea.
ln the drawings: Figure l is a side elevation of one form of my device. Fig. Q. is an end view of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a view similar to F ig. l, but shows a slightly modilied form of my invention. Fig. 4 is an end view of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a view on a smaller scale, of my device applied to a straight edge. Fig. 6 represents one form cf my invention applied to a square.
Tn the description like numerals and characters of reference are used to'designate like and corresponding parts.
The forms of level vnow in general use are objectionable to the artisan for the reason that they take up too much room in his tool bag or box, and further provide an additional weight for him to transport.
My idea broadly considered is to provide Specification of Letters Patent.

a level of small size and light weight with an accompanying attaching member having a straight edge by which the level may be used in connection with any straight edge or other similar implement and readily detached therefrom for other use. This device may readily be attached to a square, for instance.
The preferred form of my invention is shown in Figs. l and 2 wherein the numeral l designates the tube which has one end closed and the other one provided with a screw threaded plug 2. This tube has the open portion 3 in which is displayed the glass tube l which contains the usual liquid and bubble. This metallic body l is provided with the extensions 5 through which pass the adjusting screws 6. The lower edge 7 of the body portion lis a true straight edge. To the sides of the lower portion of the body of this instrument are attached the frictional gripping members 8, which in this form of the device are elongated, resilient, metallic members. These members provide a ready means of attachment for the device to the article with which it is to be used. For instance, if used with a square, then spring members 8 are slipped over one arm thereof and hold the level thereon by the frictional engagement. If however the device is to be used with a brick layers or carpenters straight edge for instance, an attaching means for a straight edge is necessary. This attaching means is in the form of a bar 9 having an upper straight edge 10 and a lower straight edge ll. Projecting laterally and horizontally from the lower edge are the feet 12 having the down turned vertical ears 13 which are provided with the elongated slots llt as shown. This member 9 is attached to a straight edge by means of screws or similar means passing through the slots 14 and positioned in either a horizontal or vertical position so that the straight edge may be used in either position. The level itself may be readily positioned on member 9 and held securely thereon by means of the gripping members 8. Of course any necessary adjustment may be made by means of the screws 6.
The other form of my device illustrated in Figs. 8 and 4t is substantially the same. Tt has the body portion 20 having the upwardly extending arms 2l between which is secured the spirit level tube 22 having the opening 23 and ordinary glass tube 24:. This tube has the removable ends 25 and is held in adjusted position between the arms 2l by means or" the screws 26. The body portion has the lower straight edge 27 and is provided with spaced pairs ot resilient gripping members 28 which are located somewhat near the ends of the body portion as shown. The attaching member 9 is the same as that previously described.
The object and use of my invention has been fully described and is believed to be clear and sutlicient.
It is seen that I have provided a level which may be readily attached to and detached from a straight edge and which may be used in connection with a Square or similar device. This will be a special benefit for the artisan who carrieshis own kit of tools in that it economizes space and weight.
The construction is simple and the device is neat and attractive in appearance. The adjustment is simple, in case that is necessary.
l/Vhat I claim is l. In a device of the character described, a body portion including a spirit level and a bottom portion, said bottom portion of the body having its lower edge straight and having end extensions, resilient members secured to the opposite sides of said bottom portion of the body, said resilient members providing means whereby the device may be detachably mounted on an article and adjusting means mounted in said end extensions, whereby the device may be adjusted in proper relation to the article on which it may be mounted.
2. In a device of the character described, and in combination, a body portion including a spirit level and having a lower straight edge, and an attaching member having an upper straight edge with means for attaching said member to various instruments, and frictional gripping members attached to said body portion and adapted to engage said attaching member so as to hold the spirit level on the attaching member.
3. In a device of the character described, and in combination, a body portion including a spirit level and having a lower straight edge, an attaching member having an upper straight edge and having attaching ears or feet whereby it may be attached to instruments, said body portion having resilient metallic members on opposite sides of its lower portion in opposed relation, which are adapted to frictionally engage the attaching member and hold the level thereon.
e. In a device oi the character described, and in combination, a body portion including a spirit level and having a lower straight dge,4 and an attaching member having an upper straight edge with means for attaching said member to various instruments, and a plurality of resilient frictional gripping members attached to said body portion and adapted to engage said attaching member so as to hold the spirit level on the attaching member, with said straight edges in opposition, and means for adjusting the level relative to the attaching member.
5. In a device of the character described, and in combination, a body portion including a spirit level and having a lower straight edge, and an attaching member having an upper straight edge with means for attaching said member to various instruments, and a plurality of resilient frictional gripping members attached to said body portion and adapted to engage said attaching member so as to hold the spirit level on the attaching member, with said straight edges in opposition, said body portion having extensions, and screws adjustably mounted in said extensions and adapted to bear on said attaching member whereby the level may be adjusted relative thereto.
6. In a device of the character described, and in combination, a body portion including a spirit level and having a lower straight edge extending approximately the length of the body portion, an attaching member having an upper straight edge and having means whereby it may be detachably connected to various instruments, said body portion having resilient metallic members on opposite sides of its lower portion in opposed relation, which are adapted to frictionally engage the attaching member and hold the level thereon.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
JAMES S. DUFFY.
