INVENTOR COLUMBIA PLANOGRAPM 50-, WASHINGTON, D.
HERMANN WILMS, OF EAST PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
DRAFTING INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 8, 1911.
Application filed February 16, 1911. Serial No. 608,901.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMANN WVILMs, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at East Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drafting Instruments, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to an attachment for T-squares and straight-edges, and the primary object of the invention is to furnish a T-square or straight-edge with an adjustable scale or graduated rule that can be easily and quickly shifted to determine a measurement, thereby facilitating the work of a clraftsman by always having the scale or rule in proximity to the work and in proper alinement with the T-square or straight-edge in connection with which it is used.
A further object of the invention is to provide a small and inexpensive attachment of the above type that is adjustable to various Widths of squares or straight-edges in connection with which it is used.
l/Vith these and other objects in view the invention resides in a novel construction to be hereinafter specifically described and then particularly claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the attachment. Fig. 2 is the enlarged top plan of the attachment. Fig. 3 is a bottom plan of the attachment, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 4 l, Fig. 2 on a somewhat reduced scale.
The reference numeral 1 denotes a skeleton frame secured by screws or other fastening means 2 to a straight-edge or rule 3 intermediate the ends thereof, said frame extending rearwardly from the top of the rule and having the outer end thereof provided. with longitudinal oppositely disposed guide flanges 4 formed by bending upwardly and inwardly the edges of the frame 1.
Slidably mounted upon the rear end of the frame 1 between the guide flanges 4 is a clamping member 5, said member having the inner end thereof provided with a longitudinal slot 6 and extending through said slot is a screw 7, carried by the frame 1.
Rotatably mounted upon the upper end of the screw is a nut or head 8 that can be ad justed to frictionally grip the member 5 and hold said member relatively to the frame 1. The rear end of the-member 5 is provided with a depending transverse flange 9 and secured to the inner side of said flange, as at 10 is one end of a flat spring 11.
The frame 1 is adapted to rest upon a suitable support, as a T-square 12 and said frame is frictionally. held in engagement with the T-square by the spring 11 engaging the rear edge 13 of the T-square. The rule or scale 3 will be supported at the front edge of the T-square and the attachment can be easily shifted longitudinally of the T-square. The adjustment of the member 5 upon the frame 1 permits of the attachment being used upon T-squares or straightedges of various widths, and the adjustment of the member 5 will compensate for any weakness in the tension of the spring 11.
The frame 1 and the member 5 are cut away and of skeleton form to reduce the weight of the attachment and the cost of manufacture. The attachment can be made of light and durable material and applied to any rule, scale or straight-edge.
What I claim is 1. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a frame, a scale attached to one end thereof, guide flanges carried by the sides of the frame, an adjustable clamping member slidably mounted between said flanges and upon said frame and having a centrallydisposed longitudinally-extending slot, said member projecting beyond the rear end of said frame, a depending flange carried by the projecting portion of said member and extending parallel with and depending below the end of said frame, a bow-shaped spring having one end thereof secured to the inner face of said flange, a screw carried by the frame and projecting through said slot, and a nut mounted upon the screw and engaging said member for maintaining it in an adjusted position.
2. A device for the purpose set forth comprising a frame, a scale attached to one end thereof, guide flanges carried by the sides of the frame, an adjustable clamping member slidably mounted between said flanges and upon said frame and having a centrally-disposed longitudinally-extending slot, said member projecting beyond the rear In testimony whereof aflix my signature end of said frame, a depending flange car in the presence of two wltnesses. ried by the PIOJQCLlIlg portlon 0f sald meni- HERMANN VVILMS her and extending parallel with and depending below the end of said frame, and Witnesses:
means for maintaining said member in its MAX H. SROLOVITZ, adjusted position. KARL H. BUTLER.
