TEMPORARY BINDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CrInsLnY DOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Temporary Binders, of which the following is a specification.-
My invention relates to an in temporary binders.
An object of the invention is to provide binder posts projecting into and terminating within the upper binder member, and to provide a coiiperating locking instrumenimprovement tality entirely inclosed within said binder member.
Another object of theinvention is the provision of means preventing the papers from becoming jammed between the post and its entry orifice into the upper binder member.
Another object of my invention is to provide a temporary binder of sectional post type with a head or plug member, one for each post, adapted to'be, removablysecured to the uppermost section of the post series; the member provided with an annular flange of larger diameter than the post sections, and a reduced diameter portion smaller than the diameter of the post sections adapted to be inserted and clamped within a binder cover member so as not to protrude therefrom.
' The features of my invention are more fully set forth in the description of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1 isa top plan view of the upper binder member with the top portion of the casin removed. Fi 2 is a vertical section of the complete binder.
1 The bottom binder member 1, as illustrated, has a pair of posts projecting there from, which are preferably of sectional form, the sections relativelyscrewthreaded into each other for varying the capacity of the binder. The post sections 2 are of tubular form, riveted to the binder member 1, having the internal screw-threads at their upper end engaging with the threads on the shank or lower end 4 of a sectional 'post member 5. A head or plug member is secured to the uppermost section or member of each post to form a head for the post. This head or plug member is provided with an annular flange or collar 8 of a diameter right hand end of greater than the diameter of the post sections and the reduced diameter portion 9, which is adapted to be engaged by the re movable cover binder member 6.
The reduced diameter of binder orifice coincident with the reduced diameter portion 9 of the plug prevents insertion of the cover member upon the post section, and the shoulder or flange 8 provides a limit of plug insertion within the cover and also insures its insertion to the requisite degree to be properly engaged by the clamping mechanism.
The upper hinder or cover member, as illustrated, is of shell or box-form, having orifice 7 on its under side for entry of the post heads or reduced diameter portion 9, so that the cover member seats upon the annular flange 8 to prevent papers from being jammed into the lower post orifices.
10 represents a lock plate within the upper binder member 6. It is provided with an orificed end 11 and a notched end 12 adapted to receive the upper ends of the posts 5. Within the orifice 11 at its outer margin is secured a clamp 13, preferably a U-shaped piece of metal just fitting between the inner surfaces of as to support and position the left hand end of lock plate 10, permitting of a slight relative movement of said plate to actuate clamp 13, or bring it into a compressive contact with the left hand post. Within the notch 12, is a nut 14 at its forward end. also nicely fitting between the cover surfaces of member 6 so as to support and position the plate 10. A screw stem 15 engages nut 14:, and is provided with a squared end 16, accessible through an orifice in the right hand end of box member 6. Upon the inner end of stem 15 is a clamp 17. Thus clamp-13 is at the outside of the left hand post and clamp 17 is at the outside of the right hand post. It follows that when'stem 15 is screwed inwardly into nut 14, that the outer clamp l'? is first brought to bear against the side of the right hand post, and that a still further urgency will bring clamp 13 to bear against the outer side of the left hand post, thus exteriorly clamping the two posts and locking the upper binder member thereto.
Preferably the orifi;e end 11 has the slots 20, the limbs 21 of clamp 13 being split, and
clenched into the slots 20, and upon the metal intermediate said slots and orifice 11.
Patented Dec.30,1913.
Preferably also the nut 14 is formed with notches 22, engaging into the ofisets 23 defined by the notch 12, so as to secure and position the nut withreference to plate 10, by springing; it into place in said notched end of the lock plate.
H {wing 'thus described my invention, I claim In a device of the class described a binder member, a sectional post, a plug post member removably secured to the end section of Witnesses:
the post provided with an annular flange of larger diameter than the post section, and a reduced diameter portion adapted to engage in the said binder member.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
