UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
1 LEE 'ULLERY; or PHOENIX, ARIZONA.
TOILET-PAPER. HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, LEE ULLERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Phoenix, in the county of Maricopa and State of Arizona, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Toilet-Paper Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to paper holders and more particularly to that class of hold ers that are used for holding toilet paper, and has for its object to provide a device of this class which will be particularly suitable for the purpose in question.
The main object of the invention is to arrange it so that it will be securely locked, when closed with a roll of toilet paper thereon, so that the latter can not be removed therefrom, except in the manner intended in its ordinary use.
Another object is to provide a holder that will prevent un-rolling the paper so freely as to cause a waste of the toilet paper.
Another object is to provide a'means for preventing the removal of the holder itself, when in its closed position.
Another object of this invention. is to have a holder arranged so that the stresses placed upon the main holding bolts or fastening means that secure the paper holder to its base, may be reduced thereon and placed on other parts, provided in the device.
Another object of this invention is to have the parts of the same readily accessible for operation and adjustment.
Other objects of this invention will become apparent as it is more fully set forth.
Ordinarily the stress incurred by the weight of the paper supported by a holder is brought mainly on the means that fasten the arms of the same to the base, proper, and as the leverage of the arm is comparatively great, these stresses often result in breaking the fastening means and destroy the utility of the device. This invention avoids these objections, it being provided with means independent of the fastening bolts or rivets, which transmit a great part of the weight of the holder and paper to the base in the portion somewhat distant from the points in which the fastening bolts or rivets are placed. The device has other advantages in that it can be readily unlocked when it is desired to place a new roll of paper on same, and the means for locking the portions that Specification of Letters Patent.
support the paper is adjustable, so that the wear or inequalities in the construction of the device can be readily taken care of. The holder is also arranged so that the means that secure the same to the wall of a toilet room are covered by parts of the device when the same is closed, thereby preventing the removal of the same until the roll of toiletpaper is practically used up. The ordinary paper holder can be readily and easily opened at any time, and the toilet paper removed, which is not possible in this device, when the same is in its closed position.
The ordinary holder permits unrolling the paper easily,'the roll often turning several times, when pulled rapidly, thereby unrolling a. great quantity ofpaper, which results in an extravagantwaste, which unrolling is satisfactorily retarded in this holder.
In the construction shown in the drawings, which illustrate by way of example, an embodiment of this invention ;Figure 1 represents a side elevation of a toilet paper holder embodying this invention, the dotted lines in the same showing the relative position of the paper in the holder. Fig. 2 is a front View of the holder, and also indicates in dotted lines the open position of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional detail taken along the line aa of Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a sectional detail taken along the line 6-?) of Fig. 1; and Fig. 5 is a cross section of the sleeve 7, showing the spring that retards the unrolling of the paper, by pressing against 7 Patented Nov. 25, 1913. Application filed February 26, 1913. Serial No. 750,913.
the inner surface of the'roll of paper. The
spring. is numbered 22.
Similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the drawings.
Reference character 1 represents a roll of paper that is supported by the holder in .(IUGS'EIOH, which consists mainly in arm portions 2, which are preferably of the construction and design shown by the drawings. The lower portion 3 of each arm is provided with a threaded hole, 4:, therein, in which threaded plugs 5 are arranged to'engage, in order to hold their respective sleeves, 6 and 7. The portions of the sleeves that are arranged to come adjacent to the arms are suitably screw threaded to receive the plugs 5. Each plug is provided with a slot, 8, on its inner end, for the purpose of receiving a screw-driver, for actuating the plug.
The sleeve 7 is provided with a suitable wedge-shaped locking member 9, that is secured thereto by means of a rivet 10, ad-
jacent to that portion of thesleeve which comes adjacent to sleeve 6. A spring catch 'member 11, is threaded and secured to the plug 5, as is clearly shown in Fig. 3, and its outer end portion is enlarged so as to engage with the inner edge portion of wedge member 9, in order to lock the sleeves 6 and 7. in properalinement with each other, H Th sleeve 7 is provided wi th a suitable slot 12, therein, to permit'releasing catch 11, when the holder is empty. 7 j, a V
The upper portion of each arm h'a s a'flattened plate 13, which is provided with a suitable hole in the upper portion thereof, so
that it can be pivot-ally secured by means of.
a rivet or bolt 1, t o the base plate 15'. The portion of the lower part of each arm 2, that QistJ-shaped, as shown at 16 in Fig. 4, is jar- 20 rangedto pass under (or behind),a portion ofplate 15, (the back of plate 15 being hollowed out to receive it), so that the arms are clamped on the ends of the plate, when the holder is in a locked position, thereby "assisting the rivets in holding the arms securely andrigidly in place. I 7
When paper has been placed :on the holder and the various parts are intheir normal position, the weight of armsZ, and the paper sleeves thereon isborne by the rivets 14, in part, and the remaining portion of the weight is-takencareof by theprojecting portion or lip 18, which engages with'the plate 15, in two ways, first on the inner,'main surface of the same, and secondly on the "lower raising portion 19', of plate 15, as is clearly-shown in Flg. 1 It can be readily means of the rivet 10 is an 'arcuate spring 'member which is adapted to frictionally engage the inner surface of a roll of paper to prevent the turning of the same unless turning movement is applied thereto.
The manner of opening the holder is by removing the catch 11, from off the wedge member 9, which can be done only when the holder is empty.
This permits the arms 2 to be pivotally swung on the bolts or rivets 14, to the position shown by the dottedlincs in Fig. 2. The catch can be readily gotten at after the paper roll has been removed, because of the provision of the "slot 12, in the sleeve 7. It is also apparent that the plug 5 can be readily gotten atsfor any purpose whatever, when in the position shown by the dotted lines. The peculiar form of catch onables a certain amount of adjustment to be .made in its relation to the member it ongages with, and at the same time its cient resilient act-ion enables it to preform the work intended of it, without necessitating additional springs for the purpose.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed, is v i A holder for toilet paper comprising in combination a base plate having slots in the sides thereof, a plurality of arms, pivotally mounted on said base plate, a plurality of lips disposed on said arms, and arranged to engage in said slots and rest on said plates, a plurality of members secured to said arms and adapted to cover the front portion of said plate, a plurality of sleeves adjustably mounted on said arms, provided with resilient; locking means to be kept, in alinement with ach other, for holding the toilet paper thereon, means for locking the sleeves together that can not be unlocked except when the holder is empty, (thereby preventing removal of the roll of toilet paper, except as intended), and means for fastening said holder to the wall, disposed in said plate and adapted to be covered by said members when the holderis in its closed position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of, two witnesses. LEE ULLERY. Vitnesses V. M. FioKAs,
K. MAXWELL.
