ADJUSTABLE LAM P-HOLDING DEVICE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 617,179, dated January 3, 1899.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MARTHA M. PARVIN, of Muscatine, in the county of Muscatine and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Lamp- Holding Devices; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.

This invention is an improvement in adj ustable lamp holding devices for sewing machines. Its primary object is to provide an improved adjustable lamp holding attachment for sewing-machines, whereby the operator can quickly adjust the lamp to any position desired, the same being retained in its adjusted position with perfect safety.

A secondary object is to provide a self-adjusting holder for lamps of various kinds.

Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable reflector attachment in combination with the lamp to increase the efficiency thereof.

The invention therefore consists in the combinations and constructions of parts hereinafter described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of part of a machine with my improved attachment applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective View of the attachment as applied to the machine. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, and Fig. 4; is a detail.

A designates the top of an ordinary machinetable, and to the rear side of this table is hinged a plate B, which may be of metal, wood, or other suitable material. This plate can be lowered, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, when the lamp is not to be used; but when the lamp is to be used it is raised and is held flush with the top of table A by means of buttons or bolts a, as indicated in Fig. 3, which when turned in one direction Will underlie the table A and when turned in another direction will sustain the plate in the desired position. The plate is formed with a longitudinal slot 1;.

to any suitable support, and in the present instance this bolt may be passed through the slot 1) of the plate B and secured bya thumbnut d on its lower end, allowingthe holder to be readily adjusted to any position desired longitudinally of the plate. The pieces G ex tend radially and horizontally outward from bolt D for a short distance and then are bent upward and slightly inward and connected to an annulus C a short distance-above the plate. These pieces also then extend above the annulus and are bent outwardly and then inwardly, their upper ends tending to con verge. The upper ends may be finished in any desired or ornamental manner and are shown as curved. The portions of the pieces 0 above annulus 0 form spring-clasps c, which are adapted to grasp the bowl of a lamp and securely hold the same, as indicated in the drawings. This holder is adapted to various forms and sizes of lamps and will hold the same securely.

With lamps having stands the stand can pass through annulus O and rest upon the lower parts of the pieces 0, while the globe is grasped by the clasps c, as indicated.

The simplicity and utility of this holder will be obvious from the drawings.

I also provide an adjustable reflector at tachment which can be held in the holder, and this comprises a band E, having one end bent to encircle the neck-piece of a lamp and upright by friction or which may be provided with the adj Listing-screw f, as shown. To this piece f is attached a reflector G of metal or other suitable material. It is obvious that the reflector can be easily adjusted to any position around the neck of the lamp and that the lamp can be readily adjusted along the length 01": the table A.

The lamp-holder might be firmly fixed in any position where it is desired to secure a lamp, the lamp being readily removable there from.

As applied to a machine the device is particularly useful for those who have to do night-work, as the lamp is held securely behind the machine and at the same time can be adjusted to any position desired along the length of the table which will best suit the character of the work being done and give the best light thereon.

Having thus described my invention, what Iclaim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a lamp-holding attachment for sewing-machines, the combination of the longitudinally-slotted plate attached to the top of the machine; with a lamp-holder, consisting of a series of spring-strips united at their lower ends to a threaded bolt and having upwardly-proj ecti n g portions bent substantially as described so as to clasp the globe of a lamp; said bolt depending through the slot in the plate so that the holder can be adjusted longitudinally of the machine=top, and a nut on said bolt by which the holder is detachably and adj ustabl y secured to the plate.

2. In a lamp-holding attachment for sewing-machines, the combination of the longinected intermediate their ends to an annu= lus, and having projecting portions above their annulus bent so as to clasp the globe of a lamp; said bolt depending through the slot in the plate, by which the holder is detachably and adj ustably secured thereto, substantially as described.

3. The herein-described adjustable lampsupport for sewing-machines consisting of the longitudinally-slotted plate B hinged to the table-top of the machine, and means for holding said plate in line with the top of the machine; with the lamp-holder consisting of radial pieces 0 connected at their lower ends to a bolt D projecting through the slot in the plate, and having a nut d on its end below the plate, said strips being also bent upwardly and connected to an annulus 0 above the plate and extending above said annulus, the portions of the spring above said annulus being bent into clasps 0 adapted to clasp and hold the lamp, for the purpose and substantially as described.
