PACKING.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANCIS Hononnvson, a subject of the King of Great Britain and lreland, and a resident of Edgewood Park, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made a new and useful Invention in Packing, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to packing and it is particularly adapted for packing to be used in connection with the spindles of turbines or similar machines.
One object of the invention is to provide means whereby the gland through which the spindle projects may preferably be initially packed with steam and subsequently packed with water, after which the steam for the packing may be cut off. Some turbines are arranged to operate at relatively low speed for considerable periods as for example in driving centrifugal pumps or for marine work. At other times these turbines operate at relatively high speeds. Where a motor, for example, a turbine is operative under variable speed conditions the water gland is sometimes insufiicient to pack the gland through which the spindle passes. F or en ample, if the turbine is running at low speed the runner in the water chamber may not be able to exert sufiicient centrifugal force on the water to form a perfect Water seal. Nhen the turbine is running at a relatively low speed a steam packing is preferable to Water but as soon as the turbine is speeded up the water may be turned on and the steam may then be cut oil so that the water may be admitted to the gland to constitute the packing. It is therefore the purpose of my invention to provide means whereby steam may bereadily introduced into the gland at the ends of the stator so that in the initial movement of the rotor the steam will serve as a packing, it being understood that when sufficient speedhas been attained the water may be introduced into the gland and the steam may be cutpofi. The contemplated structure also includes means whereby water may be cut oil at any time and steam admitted as for example when the turbine is slowing down for any cause.
In the drawings Figure l designates a vertical longitudinal sectional View through 'a turbine to which my invention is applied,

the turbine being illustrated in outline only and minus the usual appurtenances employed in connection with the stator and rotor thereof. Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical longitudinal sectional view through the end of a stator and the spindle of the rotor.
In the drmvings I have shown a preferred form of my invention in which 5 designates the stator and 6 the rotw provided with-the usual spindle or shaft 2 .g
The spindle 7 is preferably provided with a flange 15 and the body portion of the ring 14 being provided with ports, or channels 16, of which there are a suitable number and which communicate with a port 17 through the annular chamber l7 into which water may enter from a pipe 18 in communication with a suitable water supply. The ring 1% is spaced away from the collar 8 and carries a plurality of labyrinth rings 19 which surround the collar 8. The flange 11 of the ring 9 is spaced away from the end of the stator I and lies Within the flange 20 of the protecting ring 21 secured to said stator by suitable fastening devices 2? 23 is a chamber relatively large at its entrance portion 24 and in communication with a pipe 25 from a suitable steam supply.
-The chamber 23 is provided with outlet ports 26 which communicate with a space 27 between the collar 8 and the ring 14 and in which are the labyrinth rings 19. When desirable, steam may be admitted through the pipe 25.into the chamber 23 whence it will pass through the openings 26 into the chamber or space 27 and exhaust in the labyrinth into the chamber 28 formed by the flanges 11 and 15 and theweb 12 so that a, steam packing will be provided. After the turbine is speeded up water may be permitted to enter from the pipe 18 into the port'l7 through the port 16 and into the chamber 28 where the blades 13 will provide a water seal or water packing due to the centrifugal action of the rotor which carries the runner on which the blades 13 are mounted and the steam may be cut oft. It at any time'it is desired to slow down the turbine, the steam for the packing is introduced and the watermay be cut oft. From the foregoing it will be apparent that either water or steam may be provided as a packing to suit the conditions under which the turbine is operating.
In accordance with the provisions of the patent statutes, I have described the principle of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus which I now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof, but I desire to have it understood that the apparatus shown is only illustrative and that the invention can be carried out by other means.
What I claim is:
l. A packing comprising a chamber and means 'for introducing steam into said chamber in coml ination with a water seal having a'runner therein.
2. A packing member having a chamber, a runner in said chamber, a Water port in communication with said chamber, a ste chamber, and a. stean'i port. in comn'iunic 'tion with said steam chamb'en 3. A packing mei'nber having a chambr a steam chamber in commumcatmn with sald packing chamber, a water chamber and a water port in communication with said water chamber.
4. A packing member comprising a packing chamber, a steam chamber, a port to admit water to the packing chamber, and a runner in the'packmg chamber.
5. A packing comprising a steam chamber in combination with a waterseal.
rotatable part projecting thuough said-opening, a packing ring in the openings surrounding the rotating part and having an outturned ported flange, a runner carried by the rotor and housing the flange to form a water chamber in communication with the packing ring, and a steam chamber in the stator and communicating with the space between the packing ring and the rotating part.
S. A packing comprising a labyrinth steam chamber, and a water sealed chamber adjacent thereto and communicating therewith. i
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto subscribed my name this 11th day of February 1909. v
