Abstract
26,184. Soc. des Brevets Etrangers (Armengaud-Lemale) (Turbo- Moteurs). Nov. 26, 1906, [date applied for under Patents Act, 1901], Centrifugal pumps.-Partitions are arranged in the rotor passages and in the casing passages in such a way that two or more separate and parallel streams of fluid pass through the apparatus. The running joints between the rotor and stator partitions are fitted with labyrinth packing. The application of the invention to a centrifugal fan is described, but it may also be applied to centrifugal and helico - centrifugal pumps and fans, and to inward-flow and outward-flow turbines. Fig. 1 shows a multi-stage arrangement of impellers 7 in a water-cooled casing 1. A partition-disk 9 carried by the impeller blades 10 divides the passage-way through the impeller, and a disk 12 makes a similar division of the guide passage in the casing. The fluids to be compressed separately, for example gas and air for use in a gas turbine, are led by parallel or concentric pipes to the fan inlets 5, 6, and are then driven through the fan to separate outlets 21, 22. Guide-blades may be fitted in the passages 13, 14, and the partition 12 may be supported by ribs 19, 20. The impeller may deliver into water-cooled, divergent or convergent-divergent, diffusion chambers. In applying the invention to gas turbines, the combustion products and a current of cooling-fluid such as steam may be caused to pass through the turbine in parallel streams. Figs. 6 and 7 show one arrangement of baffles for preventing diffusion of the fluids at the joints between the rotating pariitions 9 and the stationary partitions 12. Rings 28 held by springs 29 run in annular channels. Holes 30 lead to a channel 31, from which leakage mixture is drawn off through a pipe 42 by an auxiliary fan on the main shaft. In a modification the rings 28 are dispensed with, and ordinary labyrinth packing is used. Fig. 9 shows another arrangement in which an annular resilient extension 33 of the partition 9 projects into a deep groove in the fixed partition 12. The sides 36 of the groove may be formed of rings. The extension 33 is fitted with ribs 34 or with rings similar to the rings 28, Fig. 6, coacting with grooves in the walls 36. In large machines the part 33 may be made rigid. The Specification in the original form as published under the Act of 1901, comprises also the statement that the invention is applicable to screw fans and parallel-flow turbines. This subject-matter does not appear in the Complete Specification as accepted.
