WILLIAM JAMES HOPE, 0F TUNICA, MISSISSIPPI.
BROOM.
To all 10h-omit may concern Be it known that I WILLIAM J. I-IorE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tunica, in the county of Tunica and State of Mississippi, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brooms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art. to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new anduseful improvements in broom or brush holders and comprises a simple and etlicient device of this nature having various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a side elevation of the broom holding device made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view centrally and longitudinally on line 2-2 of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is an edge view of the holding device with the brush removed.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A, A designate two clamping members having angled edges A which are adapted to engage over the opposite edges of the head of a brush B, and C, C are screws which pass through registering apertures in said clamping members, and winged nuts D are fitted to the threaded portions of the screws. A resilient plate, vdesignated by letter E, is also engaged by said screws, the latter passing through apertures therein and between clamping members and the shank portion of said plate is mounted in a slot F formed in the end of the handle II and held therein by means of a rivet K or other fastening means. It will be noted upon reference to the cross sectional view of the drawings that the slot formed in the end of the handle has tapering walls in order to allow the plate to have a lateral swinging movement.
Each of the clamping members C has a Specification of Letters Patent.

laterally extending flange N which is disposed at right angles to the plate from which it is formed and is adapted to form abutments against which the adjacent end of the handle is adapted to bear to relieve the pivot which holds the plate E to the handle from unnecessary strain and make the same more rigid.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that, by the provision of a broom made in accordance with my invention, means is afforded whereby the broom may be easily and quickly detached from the holder by loosening the nuts upon the screws and allowing the brush to be slid out and replaced or another substituted and which may be adjusted and held in place by tightening the screws, causing the clamping plates to `grip and hold the brush. The brush, by reason of the resilient plate to which the clamping members are held, may be allowed to yield in the tapering slot formed in the handle, while the forward movement of the handle is prevented by means of the lateral project-ions at the ends of the shank portions of the clamping plates.
YWhat I claim to be new is l. A brush holding device comprising clamping membrs and means for holding the same in clamping relation with the brush, a resilient plate fastened to said members, a handle provided with a slot having tapering'l walls in which slot said plat-e is fastened, and means for holding the handle for engaging said clamping plates, as set forth.
2. A brush holding device comprising clamping members and means for holding` the same in clamping relation with the brush, a resilient plate fastened to said members, a handle provided with a slot having tapering walls in which slot said plate is fastened, the inner ends of said clamping members being bent at right angles thereto, forming abutment means engaged by the adjacent end of the handle, as set forth.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM JAMES HOPE.
