UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORNE H. MAOORQUODALE, OF REVERE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO THE FORBES LITHOGRAPH MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS-A CO PORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
DISPLAY DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 27, 1912.
Serial No. 699,879.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LoRNE H. MACORQUO- DALE, of Revere, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, a citizen of the United States, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Display Devices, of. which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the ter is portrayed by a number of cards se-.
cured to and carriedjby the body.
The object of my invention is to provide a display device that can be easily made of cardboard or other suitable sheet materlal with as few separate parts as possible and these fitted to be combined to form the device simply by incising and scoring or bending the same; to provide, also, a device that can easily be set up in its display form when i the device will present a finished appearance and will possess a proper rigidity of structure which is much to be desired in devices of this kind.
My invention can best be seen and understood by reference to the drawings, in. p
which- Figure 1 shows thedevice in side elevation. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the device when collapsed, and Fig. 4 is a side elevation thereof when collapsed.
Referring to the drawings z-1 represents the body of the device made of some sheet material preferably cardboard. The body 1 consists of portions 2 and 3. Of these" the portion 2 is adapted to assume an upright vertical position when the device is being used for purposes of display. The portion 8 of the body is flexibly secured to the portion 2 along the line 4 being preferably made of the same sheet of material therewith) and is adapted to incline upwardly and backwardly from the portion 2 when said portion is in its vertical position aforesaid.
The portion3 of the body 1 of the device is provided with a number of flaps 5 arranged to project therefrom at intervals along the same. cured to said portion of the body to assume posit-ions insubstantial alinement therewith o1- angular posit-ions with relation thereto. In other words, their disposition and ar- Patented May 20, 1913.
The flaps are flexibly serangement is such that when the portion 3 of the device is occupying its inclined position as aforesaid the flaps may be turned to occupy a substantially vertical position as shown in Fig. 1. The flaps are preferably made integral with the same sheet as forms the body of the device, the flexible connections between the flaps and the body being obtained by scorings 6 therein.
Secured to the face of the base 2 of the body of the device and also to the faces of the respective flaps 5 are cards 7 on which the matter to be displayed is represented. Thus supported with the portion 2 of the body occupying a vertical position and the portion 3 thereof an inclined position, the cards will be supported one above the other in an ascending retrogression.
The body of the device is supported and the cards 7 and flaps carrying the same maintained in a proper upright vertical position by means of a back 8. This back is flexibly secured to the body of the device. According to the construction shown it is side of the'base portion 2 of the body of the device whereby the back may be turned thereon about a joint 10 and assume a vertical position extending substantially at right angles to the body when the back is acting to support the same, or be turned to occupy a folded position over the body and cards carried thereby when thedevice is collapsed as will hereinafter be more fully explained. Above the joint 10 the back is prorovided with aflap 9 secured to the rear vided with a forward-inclined edge 11" against which the portion 3 ofthe body is adapted to bear when the back is occupying its operative position for supporting the body. The back is also provided along the forward edge 11 thereof with projections 12 corresponding in number with the cards 7 carby the flaps 5 on the portion 3 of the body. The parts 12 pass through the portion 3 of the body by slots-l3 formed therein, and their form, disposition and arrangement are such that when the back is supporting the body these projections will bear against the cards carried by the portion 3 of the body and hold them in a proper upright vertical position. At the same time the card afiixed to the base portion 2 of the body will assume an upright vertical position therewith in asmuch as this is the usual position of this portion of the body as above described.
In order that the body portion 3 of the device may be held to fit snugly against the forward inclined edge 11 of the back when occupying its operative position supporting the body, the back is adapted in part to lock in behind the body. This effect is obtained by providing one of the projections 12 which pass through the body with an upward extension 14 presenting an edge 15 removed from the forward inclined edge 11 of the back and separated from it by an amount about equal to the thickness of the material forming the body. The slot 18 in the por tion 3 of the body through which this pro jection passes gradually increases in width as it extends upwardly and at its upper end is extended by an extension 16 laterally 01iset from the center of the portion 3 of the body or that portion thereof which lies in alinement with and adjacent to the inclined edge 11 of the back, to leave a corner edge portion 17 By laterally bending the projection 12- it and its extension 14 is passed through the slot 13 and its extension 16 until the portion 3 of the body engages the inclined edge 11 of the back when the projection will spring back into its original position, the corner edge portion 17 of the body slipping in between the edge 16 of the projection on the back and its inclined edge 11, the body being thereby held to fit snugly against the back.
For the sake of giving added stability to the device when in its display form I prefer, also, to provide the portion 3 of the body with an extension 18 flexibly connecting with the top edge of the body and extending over the top edge, of the back to become attached thereto. The attachment is made by incising the rear edge of the back near the top thereof to form a hook 19. The extension 18 slips over this hook and locks in back of the same by a slot 20 and offset 21 formed in the extension.
The further adaptability of the parts is such that the portion 3 of the body of the device may become detached from the back simply by a reversal of the operations above described for converting the device into its display form, when all the parts will lie fiat, the cards 5 carried by the flaps turning in against the portion 3 of the body and the Iback folding over onto the body and cart s.
Having thus fully described my invention,
I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patentof the United States 1.
