To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM Morn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Spalding, in the county of Greeley and State of Nebraska, have invented new and useful Improvements in Stamp-Canceling Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to hand stamp canceling devices, and one of its objects is to provide a device of this character having a flexible yielding connection between the die and handle, whereby the die will be squarely impressed regardless of the angle at which the handle is held.

A further object of the invention is to provide a hand stamp in which the die is normally held at a working angle to the handle, and in which the backing spring is maintained in proper relative position to exert pressure on the die.

A still further object of the invention is to provide a hand stamp having a die of simplified construction and universally mounted in a novel manner to facilitate its application to the supporting shank.

The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of a stamp canceling device embodying my invention. The outer end of the shank is reduced to form a neck portion 5 terminating in a spherical head or ball 6'which universally supports the die 7, which may be of any preferred construction. The back of the die is provided with a socket 9 receiving the ball or head 6, and universally mounting the die upon the shank 4. The socket opens through the upper surface of the boss, as

at 10, which opening is of proper form for the free movement of the neck 5.

As shown, the socket lug is provided with equidistant notches 11 forming intervening fingers 12. These fingers, which are normally spread open, are bent inwardly after the insertion of the ball or head, to retain the latter in place, whereby a mode of con nection is provided which simplifies the construction of the die and reduces the number of employed parts. A coiled backing spring 13 incloses the shank and convex surface'o f the lug and bears against the back of the die body so as to normally hold it in working position, while telescopically coupling the handle and die to permit relative universal motion between the same, whereby the die is adapted to be firmly impressed regardless of the angle at which the handle is held on each stamping action. A sleeve or ferrule 14 is fitted upon the handle and projects beyond the same to inclose the upper end of the spring, whereby lateral undue distention of the spring is prevented and the spring maintained in proper position to compensate for the angular disposition of the handle and shank.

It will be understood from the foregoing description that the described construction of the joint enables the die to beconveniently connected with the head of the shank and the device as a whole to be economically manufactured. Such construction also reduces the number of parts and the liability of the tool getting out of order. By arranging the handle and shank at an angle provision is made to adapt the device to be held and used more comfortably and conveniently by the operator and with less strain upon the hand and wrist in stamping a large amount of mail matter, as will be readily understood.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim as new is:

A stamp canceling device comprising a die having a dome-shaped boss or projection of less diameter than said die and provided with a socket, a stem having a symmetrical head fitting within the socket, whereby the die and stem are universally jointed, a handle receiving the opposite end of the stem, said stem and handle having their longitudinal axes arranged substantially at an obtuse angle to each other, a sleeve inclosing the lower end of the handle and upperend of the stem and spaced from the die an leaving the lower end of the stem exposed, In testimony whereof I afiix my signature and a coiled spring bearing respectively at 1n presence of two Witnesses. ltS QPPOSltG ends agalnst the die about the donie shaped boss and against the lower end WILLIAM L of the handle, said spring being arranged to Witnesses:
