METHOD OF TREATING THE TIPP ING MATERIAL 0F CIGARETTE-TUBES.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed June 15, 1912. Serial No. 703.872.
Patent ed May 13,1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Ewan) Konaxnn. a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing at Dresden, Germany havc invented a new and useful Method of Treating the Tipping Material of Cigarette-'luhes, of which the following is a specification.
In the manufacture" of cigarette tubes which are tipped with some stitl' mouthpiece material such as cork or the .like it is difiicult to obtain a smooth and continuous joint betweenthe tipping material and the rest of the tube oiving to the difference in the rigidity of the two materials.
The present invention relates to a new step in the art of applying mouth-piece ma: terial to cigarettes or cigarettfe tubes with a view to overcoming the ditiiculty above mentioned and consists in first passing the tipping material, either separately or in combination with the cigarette paper, previous to the formation of the tube, through a die which sets the edgesthereof to substantially the shape they are goin ito have on the completed tube, and then atiixing the shaped and set tipping material to the end of the-cigarette. Treated in this manner'the tipping material will lose its tendency to straighten out and will form a smooth continuous joint with the cigarette paper.
The die through which the materials are passed may be of various constructions and may either be used .cold or'adapted for heating. Several forms of such dies are illustrated by way of example in the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 representing an end view of one form of die. Fig. 2, a longitudinal section of the same, and of the material under treatment, means being. shown for heatiug'thc die, Fig. 3. a view of a die composed oi grooved rollers between which the strip is passed together with the shaping block. Fig. 4;. a side view of another form'of die. Fig. 5 an end view of the same, Fig. (i, a side view of yet another form, and Fig. 7, an end view of the latter.
in Figs. 1. 2, and 4- to 7 the die is desig natcd l and the tipping material, which may consist of cork or the like, is designated 2. The tipping material is drawn through the die, as indicated in the figures, the die be- Copies of this p tent may be obtained for five cents each,
ing formed so as to impart to the cork strip, or at least to the margins thereof. the shape or substantially the shape they are going to have on the completed cigarette tube. The strip as thus shaped and set is then applied to the month end of the cigarette or cigarette tube in thc'usual way. as for instance by hand or by suitable mechanism. and inasmuch as the mouth piece material has been shapedand set before its application to the cigarette. a smooth and continuous joint will result. The dies may be heated in any suitable manner. for instance by flames arranged as shown in Fig. 2.
' The die shown in Figs. 4 and 5 is adapted to shape the tipping strip so as to fit flatpressed cigarettes. in Figs. 6 and T a die is shown which bends the whole strip into a tube. with overlapping ends.
According to Fig. 3 a shaping block 3 is provided which is passed together with the strip between three grooved rollers i set at an angle to each other. The rollers shape the strip by pressing it against the block.
()ther arrangements may bc'rcsortcd to as long as the stitl tipping material is bent to shape before the cigarette tube formed and before the tipping material is afiixed thereto.
I claim 1. The method of applying mouth-piece material to cigarettes which consists in bonding and setting a strip of mouth pi'ece material to a shape cm'rcsponding substantially to the form of the cigarette to which said mouthpiece is to be applied and then permanently attaching the mouth-piece to an end of the cigarette.
2. The method of applying mouth-piece material to cigarettes, which consists in sulr jecting a piece of the said material to the. simultaneous action of pressure and heat be tween dies shaped to bend and set said material to substantially the. form of the cigarette to which the material is to be applied and then ailixing the said shaped mouthpiece to an end of the cigarette.
