My invention relates to a'portable liain iner and more particularly relates to a nieelninieally-aetuated hammer.
The invention is designed to be an iinprovenient oijer the hammer fully described in my tto-pending application. Serial No. 533,867, filed December 1S, 1910.
An object 'of the present invention is to provide a lianiiner automatic in its :it-tion and which will receive i'tst'lireet` force troni a compressible spring.
A further object/,of the invention is to vary the tension on the spring.
A further object is to quickly vary the in tensity ot blowdelivered by the hammer while in operation.
A still 'further object of the invention is to provide a device oit the above-indicated character, which possesses relatively few parts which might Let out ot order7 which is simple in its construction and operation, and which may be quickly and accurately adjusted for its various functions.
lVith the above and other objects in view, as Willmore fully hereinafter appear. the present invention consists in certain novel detailsof construction and arran geinent of arts hereinafter fully described, illustrated 1n the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Slidably mounted in the barrel 1 adjacent the inner end of the tool, is a plunger 11, which is adapted to reciprocate in the barrel 1. The end of the plunger 11 opposite the tool-- 4, is provided with a head 12 connected to the body of the plunger by means of a stern* 13. Normally bearing upon the head 12, is a follower 14, from opposite sides ofwliieh project pins 15 sliding in slots 16 extending y through opposite sides of the barrel 1, vand permitting a limited movement of the follower .l-I-. Projecting toward the handle t'roni saidV follower is a stud 1T, surrounding wliieh stud and bearing on the follower 14, is one end ot a coiled compression spring 18, the other end of which surrounds the screwthreaded end 19 of a bolt Q0, which bolt-is rotatably mounted in the handle 2 and is actuated by means ot' a thumb screw 21. The end ot' the spring opposite the end bearing on the follower lftvbears on a nut V9.2 in' serew-threaded engagement with the bolt 20, so that by rotating the bolt; ,the nut will bek advanced along the sanie,.varyiiig the tension of the spring' 18.` To prevent the nut Ytroni rotating` a pin Q3 projects from the periphery of the same and slides in the slot' 2-1 in the inner bore of the barrel.
In order to compress the spring 18 to draw the, plunger 11 away from the tool 4, a rain wheel 2 having a plurality of cam teeth 26 is rotatably mounted withina casing 2T and keyed to a shaft. Q8, which shaft may be rotated by hand but preferably is' rotated hy any suitable mechanical means.
It will be seen that the spring 1S will 'force the head 19. intoengageinent with the teeth 26. These teeth revolving' in the direction indicated by the 'arrow` will engage the' head 12. force the plunger-"'11 away l'rem the tool 4, and at the same time` compress the spring 1S. As the teeth 21' slip by the head 12 the latter will be free to respend to the action ot the spring,r 1H. said yspring;r then suddenly forcing the plunger 11 into engagement with the tool l.
The tool is held against the work by means of the handle .0, which may be used as a breast plate, or it may be supported by any other suitable means. The effect of the teeth engaging the head 12 will be to reciprocate the plunger 11, causing 'a series ot rapid sharp blows to be impressed on 'the tool 4. Should it be desired while working the device, to vary the intensity oit the blows made by the tool 4:, the cam-wheel Q5 is bro-ught closer to the head l2, thereby causing the plunger to travel a greater distance under the influence of the spring` 1S before it strikes the tool and is subsequently operated by the next succeedingtooth ot the cam wheel. One means for varying the Iocation of this cam-wheel is disclosed, and consists in the mounting of the casing 27 in two parts, asshown more particularly in wFig. 2, the lower portion 29 being formed into opposing semi-cylindrical parts co-acting to inclose therebetween the barrel 1, which parts are held in position by screws 30 or other suitable-fastening means, and. the-casing is heldin upright position by means of a guide plate 31 mounted inthe lower portion of the casing 27 and extending 7 partly into the longitudinal slot 32 in the lower portion of the barrel 1 and opposite the slot 33 thro-ugh which projects the teeth 26 of the cam-wheel 25. It will be seen thatY by'this connection the casing 27 and the contained ratchet Q5 are slidable longitudinally on the barrel 1, to vary the engagement of the teeth 26 with the head 12.
In order to retain the casing in the desired position, and at the same time, to facilitate the adjustmentof thesame, an arm 34.-.has one end pivoted at 35 to the casing 27, the, other'end of which extends at right angles to the'arm 34, to form Ia handle 351 extending substantially parallel to the grip-A pingportion 36 of the handle 2. By this means the gripping portion 36 and the handle 351 may be grasped with one'hand. The inner edge lof the arm'34t has a series of teeth 32 projecting therefrom, which teeth are adapted to' engagea toothed ring 38 rigidly mounted on the barrel l', adjacent its connection with the handle '2.' The arm 34- vis'maintained in engagement with the ring effected while the device is in` operation.

- Copiesof this patent may be obtained for claim as new and desire to secure by Letters -Patent:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a barrel, of a tool adapted to reciprocate in said barrel, a plunger' adapted to operate said tool, a member having a plurality of teeth thereon adapted to intermittently actuate said plunger in one direction, a spring 'for operating said plunger in the opposite direction, and means to adjust the toothed member with respect to said spring while the device is in operation to vary the strokeof the plunger.
2. ln a spring hammer, a barrel having a handle rigidly attached to one end thereof, a reciprocating member mounted in said barrel, a head, a stem connecting said head and reciprocating member, a casing slidably mounted onsaid barrel, a cam wheel jour naled in and housed by said casing and ro;
tating opopsite said stem, said cam wheel having teeth thereon adapted to engage said head, to move the reciprocating member in one direction, a coil spring compressed by the movement of said head in said direction,
Aand an arm pivoted to said casing, said arm having a handle "coacting with said barrel handle, whereby the handle on the `arm and the handle on the barrel may be simultan-- ously grasped, to move said cam wheel into closer engagement with said head.
3. In spring hammer, a barrelV having a handle rigidly attached to one end'thereof, a reciprocating member mounted in said barrel, a head, a` stem connecting said headand reciprocating member, a casing slidably mounted on said barrel, a cam wheel journaled in and housed by said casing and rotating opposite said stem, said cam wheel havingteeth thereon adapted to engage said head, to move the reciprocating memberin one direction, a coil spring compressed by j the movement of said head in said direction, an arm pivoted to said casing, said arm havinga handle coacting withsaid barrel handle, whereby the handle on the arm and name to this specification in' the presence of two subscribing witnesses. f y
