BREAD-BOARD.
I 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWIN S. BENNETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Wollaston, county of Norfolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Bread-Boards, of which the following description, in connect-ion with the accompanying drawing, is a specification, like characters on the drawing representing like parts.
This invention relates to bread-boards and pertains more particularly to a bread-board having guiding means for a knife associated with a side guide and a movable guide for determining the thickness of the slices to be out.
In order to illustrate my invention I have shown in the accompanying drawing one embodiment thereof in which the essential features will be described hereinafter.
In the drawing: Figure 1, is a perspective view of my invention illustrating the guide in different positions. Fig. 2, is a plan showing the parts in the operating position. Fig. 3, is a vertical section on line 33 of Fig. 2.
It is understood herein that the terms applied to the different parts illustrated in the drawing are employed in the generic and descriptive sense and not for the purpose of limitation. Any limitations of the invent-ion will be pointed out by the relation of the elements within their true scope in the appended claims.
The use of the word bread-board, etc., is intended to refer equally to a board on which may be sliced meats, cakes or other articles of food that can be readily severed from the mass to be served.
In the drawing 10 represents a board or base of any suitable character on which the slicing operations are performed. The base may be made of any suitable material such as wood or metal. Herein it is shown as consisting of a substantially channel shaped metal member which is inverted so that the sides project downward and the cutting op eration takes place across the flat of the channel portion. At the central portion of the said base 10, and on the sides thereof is a pivot 15 upon which is swiveled a knife guide 16. This knife guide 16 may consist of a single guiding member against which is placed any long bladed knife the side of which engages the said guide while the operator is slicing the food. said guide 16, is of an arch or inverted U shape construction extending over the top of the base 10 and provided with an eye 18 at each end to engage with the pivot 15. To retain the knife at all times against the guide 16 during its descent, I provide front guides 20 parallel to the guide 16, so that the knife is guided against any side movement. At the top of the front guides the ends 21 thereof are turned out-ward so that a knife may be more readily inserted between the guide 16 and front guide 20. To insure the said guides 16 and 20 being at all times perpendicular t0 the base 10 when the guides are in the operating position, I provide the guide 16 at each side thereof with an eye 21 to receive the inturned ends 25 of a U shaped brace or arm 26. The part 27 of said arm 26, is adapted to project across the end of the base 10 to be received in an upturned socket 29 formed at the end of the base 10. By means of this construction the portion 27 may be withdrawn from the upturned socket 29, and the guides 16 and 20 turned about their pivots 15 until the said guides are parallel with the sides of the base 10 when the rounded portion 30 of the guide 16, can be made to spring into the notch 31 in the end of the base 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The arm 26 can then be swung in the same direction thereby to furnish a bail by means of which the entire device may be placed on a hook to lie flat against a wall.
Extendin transversely across the top of the base 10 1s a gage 32 movable relative to the guides 16 and 20 to gage the thickness of the slice when the said guides are in the perpendicular position with respect to the base 10. The said gage may consist of any suitable construction, but herein is shown as being of substantially heavy wire looped back on itself to form the retaining end 33 and having a downwardly extending portion 34 passing through a slot 35 through the base 10. The wire of which the said gage is composed of is then bent rearwardly and parallel to the base 10 forming a portion 36 which is provided with a part 37 extending upward through the said slot 35. The part 36 extends beneath the pivot 15, and bears thereagainst so that the guide cannot be removed from the base without withdrawing the pivot 15. The wire of the gage is again bent rearwardly and parallel with the board to form a side guide 38 projecting above the said base 10, and said guide terminates in a projection 39 adapted to engage with any one of a pluralitv of alined gage holes 40.
The operation and application of my invention is as follows: Assuming that the guides 16 and 20 are in the dotted position shown in Fig. l, the said guides are slipped out of the notch 31 and raised to a perpendicular position and the bail or arm 26, is swung over until the portion 27 snaps into the upturned socket 29 to hold the said guides perpendicular to the base 10. It may then be determined how thick a slice it is desired to cut, and if the gage 32, is not in the proper position relative to the'guide 16, the operator will then grasp the side guide 38 and spring it upward withdrawing the projection 39 from the particular gage hole 40 that it occupies and then by moving the side guide 38 backward or forward to the desired position, the said side guide 38 may be released to permit the projections 39 to enter the nearest gage hole 40. This operation of shifting the side guide 38 moves the gage 32 integral therewith relative to the guides 16 and 20. A loaf of bread or other article is then placed on the base 10, with the side thereof resting against the side guide 38 and the article to be sliced is pushed forward beneath the guide 16 until it comes in contact with the gage 32. The operator then places a knife at the top of the guide 16, and passing the same downward between the said guide 16 and the guide 20 draws the knife through the bread or the article with a slicing stroke until the blade comes in contact with the base 10, thus severing the slice from the article. The slice will fall over the gage 32 and the oper ator will again move the article forward until it again comes in contact with the gage 32. The knife having been in the meantime withdrawn from the guides 16 and 20 is again presented to the guides for another cutting stroke and the operation is repeated.
By means of my invention thick or thin slices of any gage will be cut or severed from the'article and each slice will always be of uniform thickness and will not be cut into wedges and hunks.
I have described herein one embodiment of my invention; but it is to be understood that the latter is not essentially limited to the specific details of construction and organization of said embodiment, since the same may be varied without departing from the proper scope of the claims.
Claims:
1. In a device of the character described, a base, an inverted U shaped knife guide pivoted to both sides of said base, an arm pivoted to said knife guide and adapted to lock to said base to secure said knife guide in adjusted position, a gage in front of and parallel to said guide and having an extension beneath the top of said board at the cutting surface of said base and projecting above the same to form a side guide extending to the rear and transverse to said knife guide.
2. In a device of the character described, a base, an inverted U shaped knife guide pivoted to both sides of said base, an arm pivoted to said knife guide and adapted to lock to said base to secure said knife guide in adjusted position, a gage in front of and parallel to said guide and having an extension beneath the top of said board at the cutting surface of said base and projecting above the same to form 'a side guide extending to the rear and transverse to said knife guide and means on said side guide and base to lock one tothe other.
3. In a device of the character described, a base, a knife guide therefor pivoted to the sides of said base, an arm pivoted to said knife guide and adapted to lock to said base to secure said knife guide in adjusted posi tion, a combined side guide and cutting gage extending on both sides of said knife guide with a depressed portion between the said guide and gage passing the position of the knife guide.
4. In a device of the character described,
a base, a knife guide therefor pivoted to the sides of said base, an arm pivoted to said knife guide and adapted to lock to said base to secure said knife guide in adjusted position, a combined side guide and cutting gage extending on both sides of said knife guide with a depressed portion between the said guide and gage passing the position of the knife guide and means on said side guide to lock it in adjusted position relative to the knife guide.
5. In a device of the character described, a base, a knife guide pivoted to the sides of said base, an arm pivoted to said knife guide and engaging said base to lock said guide in adjusted position, a combined side guide and gage having the guide portion transverse to the knife guide and having the gage portion parallel to the said knife guide each of said portions extending above the cutting surface of said base and having a depressed portion extending beneath said cutting surface and means on said base and side guide to lock them one to the other in adjusted positions.
