It is another object of the invention to provide a tape dispenser of the above character in which the' various elements may be easily disassembled to facilitate rapid loading of'the device;

Referring to anillustrative embodiment of the invention in greater detail with particular reference with: drawings, side plates 10 and 11 are mounted on opposite sides of a bridge 12 carrying a protruding stop 13. Lugs Ma, 1% and 11a, 11b are respectively formed on the extremities of the lower edges of the plates 10 and 11, Also joining the side plates 10 and 11 is a blade mounting pin 14deformed by a rib 15 extending longitudinally thereof. As may be clearly seen from FiguresS and 6, the blade is formed with a curved channel 2'7, this construction, permitting the blade 22 to be snapped on the pin 14. A tape 39, coated on its upper surface, is passed from a roll 31 under the snubbing surfaces 20 and 21 and selectively extends upwardly against the positioning surfaces 18 and 19 (Figure 5) or outwardly in contact with the blade 22 (Figure 6). 7 V
The blade 22 is formed in such a fashion that the snubbing surface 24 is adapted to engage and press the adhesive coated tape 30 against the snubbingsurfaceslt) and 21 in order to snub the tape 30 and prevent it from being withdrawn from the roll 31 while it is being severed, as illustrated in Figure 6. q

Immediately after the tape 36 has been severed, the
blade22 will be releasedand spring upwardly about the pin 14. As the surfaces 25 and 26 approach the surfaces 18 and 19, the rib 15 on the pin 14 will tend to spread the channel 27 due' to its configuration (Figure 5). Thus,"the inner wall of the channel 27 will be in tension on the shaft 14 and the rib and the blade 22 will be held in place against the surfaces 18 and 19. As mentioned above, these surfaces are oriented to impart to r the free end 32 of the tape a curved configuration to hold it rigidly in position. v r
A number of advantages are obtained by using a snap- The determines the characteristics of the blade 22. .Thus,
the sharpness of the pointed edge 23 and the resilience and hardness of the blade must be considered in choosing a' blade for particulartapes to make certain the tape will be cleanly severed and the blade returned to the position shown in Figure 5. With certain stretchable tapes such,
for example, as one of the new polyesters known as Mylar, it may be adavntageous' to provide a protuberance on the point of the edge 23 as shown in applicants copeuding application Serial No. 396,144, filed Decemher 4, 1953, now Patent No. 2,805,714, issued September 10, 1957. With the employment of the snap-on type blade, the blade best suited to a particular tape being used may be easily andquickly snapped into place on the cutting unit.
Respectively formed on the upper edges of the side plates10 and 11 rearwardly of the flanges 16 and 17 are a pair of ears 33 and 34 serving to prevent the free end 32 from being folded back and contacting the lead of the tape 39 between the roll 31 and the flanges 16 and 17. These ears also function to secure a cover on the tape holder and dispenser as will be described hereinafter.
Formed on the upper portion of the side plates 10 and 11 is a hub indicated generally at 35 for supporting the roll .of tape 31. The hub 35 is formed from a pair of circular pieces 36 and 37 extending obliquely rearwardly from inwardly extending flanges 38 and 39, preferably formed integrally with the rear edges of the side plates 10 and 11, respectively. The pieces 36 and 37 abut each other; at their rear extremities and have formed thereon outwardly and rearwardly extending keying lugs 40 and 41,re'spectively. As may be clearly understood by referring to Figure 2, to mount the roll 31 on the hub 35 it is merely'necessary to insert a finger on one hand in the gap between the pieces 36 and 37 to flex the side plates 10 and 11 outwardly and subsequently to insert the roll in thethus widened gap with the other hand.
After mounting the roll of tape 31 on the hub 35, the free end 32 of the tape may be withdrawn and then twisted or folded to permit it to be passed between the flanges 16 and 17. Thus, due to the spaced positioning continuity in the floor thereof at the point 44. Upwardly extending circularly shaped portions and 46 may be formed on the upper surface of the base 42 on both sides of the recess 43.
Disposed on both interior vertical walls of the recess 43 and extending to the portions 45 and 46 are a pair of locking bosses 47 and 48 shaped to secure the remaining elements of the dispenser in operative position as will be apparent from the following discussion. Forward edges 49 and 50 of the bosses 47 and 48, respectively, extend in a straight line slanted rearwardly from the floor of the recess 43 to the portions 45 and 46, respectively. Inaddition, rear edges 51 and 52 of the bosses 47 and 48, respectively, each contain a substantially vertical lower edge and a rearwardly slanting upper edge,,the upper edges preferably being substantially parallel to the forward edges 49and 50..
Formed on the floor of the upwardly extending forward portion of the recess 43 is a spreader lug 53 protruding upwardly and havingits sides 54 and 55 bowed outwardly (Figures 9 and 11). i
A rubber pad 62. on the bottom of the base 42 serves to protect the finish of the surface supporting the tape holder and dispenser.
In assembling the desk type tape holder and dispenser, the holding and serving unit including the roll of tape 31 is inserted into the recess 43 with the rear straight edges of the side plates 10 and 11 contacting the edges 49 and 50 of the bosses 47 and 48, respectively, and the lugs 10a and 11a abutting the point 44. It will be noted that the lugs 10b and 1112 will hang over the-forward'lip of the recess 43, The forward edges of the keying lugs 40 and 41 will at the same time engage the upper edges of the rear edges 51 and 52 of the bosses 47 and 48. In addition, the spreader lug 53 will engage the interior surfaces of the side plates. 10 and 11 and bow them outwardly by virtue of the surfaces 54 and 55 to provide tional holding force there'between.
In pulling the tape 30 from the roll 31, the longitudinal force exerted will'be carried by the bosses 47 and 48 through thekeying lugs 40 and 41. On the other hand, urging'the tape 30 downwardly against the cutter blade 22 forces the rear edges of the plates 10 and 11 against'the front edges 49 and 50 of the bosses 47 and 48. In addition, in the event the entire holder is turned upside down, the spreader lug 53 will function to retain the tape cutting,
a holding and positioning unit in its operative position in the base 42. r
If desired, a cover 56 may be provided to enclose the roll of tape 31. Formed on the cover 56 is a head 57 adapted to engagethe base 42 as will be explained hereinafter. Centering tongues 58 and 59 extend from the lower side of the cover 56 while a flange 60 is formed on the forward edge thereof. A small protrusion 61 is centered on the cover 56 slightly to the rear of the flange 60.
In assembling the cover with the remaining elements of the tape holder, the flange 60 is snapped under the ears 33 and 34 and the centering tongues 58 and 59 are inserted between the rear edges of the plates 10 and 11 and the forward edges of the keying lugs 40 and 41. It will be apparent from Figures 8 and 10 that the head 57 will then engage the upper surface of the, base 42 including the edges of the portions 45 and-46. The protrusion 61 functions to prevent the'free end 32 of the tape 30 from adhering to the flat upper surface of 'the cover 56 thus making it simple to remove it therefrom after the device has been removed from its package, for example.
. It will be understood that the above described embodiments of the invention are illustrative only and modifications thereof will occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore, the invention is not to be limited to the specific apparatus disclosed herein but is to be defined by the appended claims. v 1
I claim:
1. In an adhesive tape dispenser, at least one side plate, means adjacent to the side plate to support a roll of the a positive fric adhesive tape, deformed pin meanssupported by theside plate, aresilientrsnubbing and cutting. blade formed with a channel for pivotal mounting on the pin .means, ta'pe positioning means supported by the side plate and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the tape extending from the roll, the deformedpin means having a first surface portion at a different radial distance from the pin axis than a second surface portion, the surface portions engaging and deforming the channel to hold a portion of the blade against the free end of the tape on the tape positioning means, the tape free end when grasped for dispensing tape urging the blade away from the tape positioning means and causing the blade to pivot on the deformed pin means. i i
2. Apparatus asdefined in claim -l wherein the blade is-formed with a cutting edge at one end and a snubbing surface at the other end and the channel is nearer the snubbing end than the cutting end.
3. In an adhesive tape dispenser, a holding and severing unit comprising two spaced side plates, means adjacent to the side plates to support a roll of the adhesive tape, deformed pin means supported by the side plates, a resilient snubbing and cutting 'blade formed with a channel for pivotal mounting on the pin means, tape positioning means supported by the side plates and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the tape at an angle to the lead of the tape extending between the roll and the positioning means, the deformed pin means including a protrusion engaging and deforming the channel to hold a portion of the blade against the free end of the tape on the tape positioning means, the tape free end when grasped for dispensing tape urging the blade away from the tape positioning means and causing the blade to pivot on the deformed pin means.
4. Apparatus as defined in claim 3 wherein the protrusion comprises a rib extending longitudinally on the pin, said rib engaging and deforming the channel to hold a portion of the blade against the free end on the tape positioning means.
5. In an adhesive tape dispenser, a holding and severing unit comprising two spaced side plates, hub means formed on the rear of the side plates adapted to mount a roll of the adhesive tape, tape positioning means supported by the plates and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the adhesive tape extending from the roll, deformed pin means supported by the side plates, a resilient snubbing and cutting blade formed with a channel for pivotal mounting on the pin means, the deformed pin means including a protrusion engaging and deforming the chan nel to hold a portion of the blade against the free end of the tape on the tape positioning means, the tape free end when grasped for dispensing tape urging the blade away from the tape positioning means and causing the blade to pivot on the deformed pin means and a snubbing surface formed on the tape positioning means against which the free end of the tape is pressed by the blade.
6. Apparatus as defined in claim 5 wherein the hub means comprises a pair of circular pieces supported by the rear edges of the side plates, respectively, each of the pieces carrying a guide lug on its extremity.
7. Apparatus as defined in claim 6 wherein the circular pieces are angularly oriented to engage at their extremities and the roll of tape carried thereby is partially disposed between the side plates.
8. In an adhesive tape dispenser, a holding and severing unit comprising two spaced side plates, means for supporting a roll of the tape at the rear of the plates, tape positioning means supported by the plates and adapted the blade against thdlfICEllIdlOf theitape on theitape positioning means, the tape free end when graspedfor dispensing tape urging the blade away fromthe' tapepositioning means and causing the bladeto. pivot 'on the de formed pin means, a snubbingsurface formed on the tape positioning means. against which .the'fiee end of thetape is .pressed by the.blade,'and transversely extending guard means supported by the plates rearwardly of the .tape positioning means for preventingthe free end'from engaging the lead of the tape. g
9. Apparatus as defined in claim 8 wherein'said guard means comprises an ear supported on the upper edge of each of the side plates i I.

In an adhesive tape dispenser,a holding-and severing unit comprising two spaced side platesyhub means formedon the rear of the side platesadapted to mount a roll of the adhesive tape, tape positioning means supported by the plates and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the adhesive tape at an angle to the lead of the tape extending between the roll and the positioning means, guard means supported by the plates rearwardly of the tape positioning means, deformed pin means supported by the side plates, a resilient snubbing and cutting blade formed with a channel for pivotal mounting on the deformed pin means, and a snubbing surface on the tape positioning means against which the free end of the tape is pressed by the blade when the tape is urged against the resilient blade for tensioning said blade and severing the tape free end, the blade moving the free end of the tape against the tape positioning means after the tape has been severed, the deformed pin means including a protrusion engaging and deforming the channel to hold a portion of the blade against the tape positioning means, the tape free end when grasped for dispensing tape urging the blade away from the tape positioning means and causing the blade to pivot on the deformed pin means.
11. A tape holder and dispenser comprising a tape holding and severing unit including a pair of side plates, hub means disposed on the rear of the side plates adapted to mount a roll of the tape with the free end thereof extending between the side plates, tape positioning means supported by the plates and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the tape, a snubbing and cutting 'blade pivoted between the plates, a snubbing surface formed on the tape positioning means against which the free end of the tape is pressed by the blade, a pair of keying lugs provided on each side of the hub means, a base formed with a longitudinal recess, and locking means on each side of the recess cooperating with the rear of the side plates and the keying lugs to secure the unit in the recess against forces applied to the free end of the tape.
12. A tape holder and dispenser comprising a tape holding and severing unit including a pair of side plates each formed with a rear edge having a straight section, hub means supported by the upper rear portions of the side plates and adapted to mount a rollof the tape with the free end thereof extending between the side plates, tape positioning means supported by the plates and adapted to be engaged by the free end of the tape, a snubbing and cutting blade pivoted 'between the plates, 2. snubbing surface formed on the tape positioning means against which the free end of the tape is pressed by the blade, a pair of keying lugs each having a straight edge on its forward portion provided on each side of the hub means at its extremity, a base formed with a longitudinal recess, a boss extending upwardly from the floor of the recess on each side thereof and cooperating with the rear edges on the side plates and the straight edges on the keying lugs to secure the unit in the recess against forces applied to the free end of the tape.
13. Apparatus as defined in claim 12 wherein the rear edges on the side plate and the straight edges on the keying lugs are substantially parallel and the bosses are formed with a pair of substantially parallel edges coopcrating with the rear and straight edges.
5 14.; Apparatus as defined in claim 12 in which a lug extending upwardly from the fioor of therecess engages and spreads the side plates to additionally secure the holding and severing unit in the recess. 7

end of acover is secured on the tape holding'and severing unit and the other-end is supported by the rear of the constituting a loop formed in the blade adjacent-to at least one side of the channel for increasingthe' resilience of the blade.
