- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that" l, ALLEN A. KARNEs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Holliday, in the county of Monroe and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Magazine-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to smoking pipes and has for an object to provide a selflighting pipe, in which the bowl of the p1pe is automatically filled with tobacco taken from the magazine of the pipe, the tobacco being then ignited by suitable igniting means forming apart of the pipe.

- 'Referringmore particularly to the-views, ll employ a pipe body 10, provided with a bowl 11, a magazine chamber 12, a chamber 13 for the reception of an igniting mechajnism, a stem 14 having tubular connection with'the bowl 11 and a cover 15 hingedl'y mounted on thepipe body 10.-and adapted" to close the magazme 12. Mounted over a plurality of rollers 16 in the pipe 10 are endbowl of the pipe, the said pipe,
less chains 17 adapted to move through the magazine 12. The magazine 12 is provided with a slidable plate 18 having at one end thereof an integral 'baflle plate 19 and the plate 18 is provided with hooks 20 for hooking engagement with the chains 17. The outer end of the slidable plate 18 is provided with a handle 21, disposed exteriorly of the pipe body 10 and formed in one of the walls of the bowl 11 and beneath the handle 21 are a series of apertures 22 adapted for the admittance of air into the bowl 11. Secured to the chains 17 is a-drag plate 19, extending vertically in the ma azine chamber 12 and adapted to operate with the chain 17. Beneath the chamber 13, a tank 23 is arrangedprovided with a filling opening 24:, a wick 25 being extended from the tank 23, through a tube 25, to the bowl 11, the upper end of the wick being adjacent the upper end of the said bowl. Fivotally mounted on a standard 26, in the chamber 13 is a curved .bar'27 provided with an integral handle 28,. extending'outwardly from one side of the pipe body and the bar 27 is provided on its outer peripheral surface with serrations-28, adapted for frictional engagement with an'ignlting medium, such as carbonized steel or flint, the mentioned igniting medium being secured to a wall of 'the bgwl. 11. A spring 30 is secured in the chamber 13 and has connection with the bar 27 for retaining the bar in normal position and a cap 31 is integrally formed on the bar 27 and adapted to normally cover the upper end or the wick 25. Beneath the outer end of the stem 14a chin rest 32 is adapted to extend outwardly from the pipe body 10 and a screw cap 33 is provided for engagementwith a pipe body 10 so that access can be had to the smoke conduit extending from the bowl of thepipe stem 14, for the purpose of cleanin the said conduit. Thebottom 34 of the owl 11 is threaded for removable engagement with the bowl so that the said bottom can be removed and the ashes of the consumed tobacco taken from the bowl,
lln the operation of my device, assuming that all the members are in normal position, when it is desired to use the pipe, the magazine 12' is filled with smoking tobacco by removing the cover 15 from the said magazine, the said cover being providedwithla suitable catch 35 for connecting the cover with one end of the pipe body ,10. After the magazine has been filled with the tobacco, the handle 21 of the slidable plate 18 is grasped and pulled outwardly to slide the plate outwardly from the pipe-body and as the mentioned plate slides outwardly, the hooks 20 will gravitationally engage the chain 17, thus tending to operate the same and in turn operate the drag plate 19 in the magazine, will force the tobacco from the magazine 12 into the bowl 11. Aftera suflicient amount of tobacco has been forced into the bowl of the pipe, the slidable plate 18 is returned to normal position and as will be readily seen by referring to the figures in the drawings herewith, the battle plate 19 will prevent any smoke from the bowl 11 passing into the magazine 12. When a suflicient amount of tobacco has been received in the bowl ll, the handle 28 is operated, thus removing the cap 31 from engagement with the wick 25 and causing the serrated bar 27 to frictionally engage the igniting medium 29 to produce a spark, which will ignite the wick 25, the said wick being saturated with gasolene or a suitable inflammable fluid located within the tank 23.
At the instant that the handle 28 is operated,
the smoker creates a suction in the bowl of the pipe by drawing'a-ir from the bowl' through the stem of the pipe body, thus causing the tobacco in the bowl to become ignited from the wick 25. When the tobacco in the bowl has become ignited, the handle 28 is released and owing to the action of the spring 30 will be returned to normal position with the cap 31 covering the upper end of the wick 25, thus extinguishing the burning end of the wick, while at the same time the cap will prevent the fluid in the tank from flowing outwardly through the wick 25 and saturating the tobacco. Thus it will be seen that in two distinct, operations the.
bowl 11 can be filled with tobacco and the same ignited, each of the said operations being performed by parts constituting a portion of my pipe.
The hooks 20 of the slidable plate 18 are so arranged with respect to the. chains 17 that after the plate has been slid outwardly and returned to normal position the chains 17 will not be actuated in view of a suitable locking ratchet 33 mounted in th'e pipe body 10 for engagement with one of the chains 17 to lock the same when the plate 18 is returned to normal position. After the tobacco in the pipe bowl 11 has been consumed the body 31 can be removed from the bowl and the ashes of the consumed tobacco taken from the bowl, and if it is desired to clean the smoke conduit of the pipe, the screw cap 30 can be removed from the body and a suit able pipe cleaner inserted in the conduit to clean the same. It will'be readily seen that provided a plurality of slots 36 at the outer end of the magazine 12 and adjacent the stem .14, the said slots being adapted to receive a picture or plate provided with a suitable monogram.
Having thus fully described the invention, what I claim as new, is
1. In a. magazine pipe the combination of a pipe body provided with a magazine chamber, a bowl formed in the said pipe body, a stem extended from said pipe body and having a conduit connected with the said bowl, a slidable plate in the said magazine chamber, a plurality of conveyers mounted in the said magazine chamber, hooks on the said slidable plate and adapted to engage the 'saidconveyers to operate the same when the said plate is partially withdrawn from the magazine chamber. a drag plate secured to the said conveyers and slidable therewith to convey tobacco from the said magazine chamber to the said bowl and means for igniting the tobacco in the said bowl.
2. In a magazine pipe, the combination wit-h a pipe body having a magazine chamber, of a bowl on the pipe body, a stem extended from the pipe body and having connection-with the said bowl, a plurality of conveyers in the said magazine chamber, means mounted to slide on the 'pipe body and .extending into the magazine chamber to engage the said conveyers and operate the same, and a brake plate movable with the said conveyers to convey tobacco from the said magazine chamber to the "said bowl.
.3. In amagazine pipe, the combination with a pipe body having a magazine chamber, of a bowl on the pipe body, a stem extended from the pipe body and having connection with the said bowl, a plurality of conveyers in the said magazine chamber, means mounted to slide,-on thepipe body and extending into the magazine chamber to engage the said conveyers and operate the same, a brake plate movable with the said conveyers to convey tobacco from the said magazine chamber to the said bowl, and a cover mounted to swing on the said magazine chamber to close the opening thereof.
4. In a magazine pipe, the combination with apipe body having a magazine chamber, of a bowl on the pipe body, a stem extended from the pipe body and having connectionwith the said bowl, aplurality of conveyers in the said magazine chamber,
