Specification of Letters Patent.

T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Jesse A. BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Texarkana, in the county of Bowie and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Rein- Holder, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in rein holders, which are adapted to be attached to any suitable place on a vehicle or hitching post, and has for its object to provide a simple and strong rein holder to which both lines can be secured together in one operation and firmly held, and from which they can be removed with a single pull.
The rein holder is so constructed that the harder the horse pulls on the lines the tighter they engage the holder and withoutany material lengthening of the lines.
It consists in certain features of construction, and a certain combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings :Figure l is a perspective view of my improved rein holder applied to the forward end of the outside of a vehicle body and illustrating one manner of securing the reins thereto. Fig. 2 is a side view of the rein holder detached. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing how the rein holder is secured to a vehicle.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate the preferred embodiment of my invention, 5 designates the rein holder, which is preferably constructed of a single piece of iron, steel, brass or other suitable material. The rein holder is provided with a base plate 6, which is oblong in its general outline with rounded corners for purposes of ornament. The base plate has a fiat inner side adapted to be secured to the side of the forward end of any other suitable part of a vehicle body, as shown in Fig. l, by means of bolts 7 which pass through perforations in ach corner of the base and the vehicle body and are secured on the inner side of the body by nuts.
Arranged longitudinally and centrally o the base plate 6 and rising at right angles or perpendicularly therefrom is a thin, flat body portion 8. The body is provided with an extension 9 beyond the base plate, which extension is formed with a deep V-shaped slot or bifurcation 10, thereby dividing the extension into two parts. The slot extends down to a point nearly on a line with the upper edge of the base plate, as shown in Fig. 3. By virtue of said slot a pair of prongs or fingers 11, 12, are provided, the inner prong or finger being longer than the outer prong or finger. Both fingers or prongs are tapered, and as a result of this, the inner long prong o-r finger is set away from the wagon body, when the rein holder is mounted in place, thereby providing a wedge-shaped space 13 between said prong and the side of the vehicle body, which space has its greatest width at the top and tapers gradually downwardly to the base plate. The tapered shape of the prongs also provides a tapered or wedge-shaped space between the prongs.
The body portion 8 is provided with a centrally-disposed, narrow longitudinallyextending slot 14 through which the reins can be passed and tied when the horse is not hitched to the vehicle. As illustrated, I have elected to show my rein holder disposed diagonally with the prongs extending upwardly and backwardly, but it is evident that the device could be vertically disposed, if desired.
As is readily apparent, the reins can be secured to the rein holder in a number of different ways, one of which is illustrated in Fig. 1. To secure the reins in the manner illustrated, the free portion of the reins is passed through the slot 13 between the inner prong 12 and the side of the vehicle,
then passed around the prong 12 and through the slot 10 between the prongs 11 and 12 and then over the lines, when a downward pull on the lines will wedge the lines securely between the body of the vehicle and the inner prong and also between the two prongs. From the arrangement of the rein holder it is plain that any pulling on the lines by the horse will only serve to wedge them tighter. To remove the reins, it is only necessary to take hold of the lines and give them a quick upward pull when the reins will slide along and off the tapered prong 12, thus releasing them. When the reins are secured between the prongs l1 and 12, the slot 14 is not used. The latter is of advantage when it is desired to tie an animal, which is not hitched to the vehicle.
What is claimed is In combination with a support, a rein holder comprising a base plate secured against the support, a body portion mounted on the base plate, and diagonally arranged prongs carried by the body portion and projecting beyond one end of the base plate in an upward direction and inclined rearwardly away from the direct pull of the reins, said prongs being outwardly tapered from the body portion to their outer ends forming a tapered slot between them and also a tapered space between the inner prong and the adjacent support, whereby when the reins are looped about the inner prong the reins will be wedged at one side between the inner prong and the adjacent support and at the other side between the inner prong and the outer prong, the pull on the reins serving to tighten the engagement of the reins with the holder.
