W. DICKS.
TUBING. APPLICATION rILnD AUG.2s,1911.
Patented Dec. 3. 1912.
Vilvlllrflllll W1 TNESSL'S IN1/EN Tax,
ATTORNLY `a iront elevation of a laflfler 'r'orinml from WILLIAM DICKS, 0F BUFFALO, NEW YORK.,
TUBING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Der'. 3. 1912.
Application tiled August 28, 1911. Serial No. 646.388.
To all `whom 'it may concern:
lle it known that l, XVILLMM Diena. a vitizen of the United States of merir'a, re- .Qnling at` Buffalo, in the County of Erie and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprorenu-nts in Tubing. nf whivh the following in a full.` Olea'. and exact tlesvrintion.
The objects of my invention are in pio rifle a tubingV which shall he light and strung am! #heap to manufacture and which shall he applicable to ladders, lieclstearla. poles. posts. or the like.
liefert-nce is to lie had to the accompany ing' drawings. forming part of this pavililation. in which like elnlrarteh` of referenve infin-ate like parts throughout. the nereral views, of which:
Figure 1 is a Sectional View ot an oblong form of tubing. Fig. 2 is a scetional view of a hexagonal forni ot' tnliing. Fig 3 is a sectional View of a selni-rircular Forni nl' tubing. Fig. 4 is a soutional view of a circular form of tubing. Fig. 5 is a Sectional View of a square form of tubing. Fig. i3 is my tubing. Fig. 7 is an enlarged VFragmental side elevation of Fig. S :nul shows the aille rails` anfl the steps made from the iivret'erred form of my tubing. Fig. H in a Sectional View of one of the side mila unil im' taken on line A--B of Fig. T. Fia'. '.l ia a .aeetional view of a forni ot tulle `invitar to' that shown in Figs. ti to S lint nl' nightly inoiitii-l construction. Fig. it) ia a notional View of an oblong Vlorni of tnliin;r similar o tinl l'ornl alunni in Fig. l hul nt' a slightly modified eonatruction.
My tnlzing is preferably anule ot' sheet metal. which is llrawn through suitable lies anti thus formed into Shape.
ln most of the formsy of my tuhe when it in living ilrawn each elige of the material in i tnanerl with a right-angled liangn ll. "l`i:i-` lange in mail@ anlistantially eignai in "u iilth to the orei'fall thif'hneas of the tinnlnwl tnlm. The; nialerial in non lient upon itfwlt' l'rmn ankh align and eqnilistanl from this renier tlnirant'. .an that. the flanges t1 arei luwnught next to vat-h other aml in snsh n position that` they exlend renti-ally arroas the tuhe ansi provide a rigid Stitfening Iih.
In tubes of polygon sections whivh have i an own nnnllier of Sitios. the talige-s nl' tln ilangm 2U will lie helll in position lay onvi corner of the tube. as shown in 2 and 5 and thas prevent their movement enlewise. But in sections which hare flat, taper` ing or curved aides, some mains hulst he employed for preventing, the flanges from becoming displaced. To accomplish this, l preferably provide a longitudinally extending groove l2 whifh is formed in theVl .sheet of material and when the sheet of material is drawn into Shape. the flanges il will engage the groove. ln a similar way the eliges of the flanges :l (Fig. 4) are engaged h v the groove 12 in tuiles anhatantially arlinrlrifal in forni.
In Fig. 9 l have shown a ruhe of the pre fel'red forni.y whioh is made up of two senarate pieces-i of material `wcurefl or liehi to gethur by an).Y snit le means. lin thi` iignre. l have nhnwi. hanll lil surrounding the tnhing. These llanils may lie plan-m at intel 'als along the length of the lahm;r and thus tirmly hohl the two halves together.
ln Fig. i0 l have Shown a tulle, in form similar to that shown in Fig. l, but lille Fig. U. it is marie nn of two nieces of ninterial. l have here Shown the parts nl the tube secured together hy living welileil,
brazed or Solllereil at` the joint.
Then I inalie my tubing in two parts, as shown in Figa. t) anrl 1U. l prefmallly forni an inwarill)r tlnneil flange ll at the onlinr* migre of vavh part. :mit han the laluna' is linie-heel thaw llanji'oa il haar agaiint tin flanges ll.
