ALEXANDER WILSON, OF CLAYTON, NEW YORK.
SCRAZPER ATTACHMENT FOR TORCHES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1912.
Application filed March 23, 1912. Serial No. 685,790.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER WILSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Clayton, in the county of Jefferson and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Scraper Attachments for Torches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to torches and scraping knives, and consists in a device for detachably securing the scraping blade to the torch in such manner that said blade is held at the proper angle with respect to the torch flame and surface being scraped, to the end that such surface may be uniformly cleaned.
The invention further proposes an attachment of the character in question, consisting in a clamping arrangement whereby the relative angular positions of the torch burner and scraping blade may be varied at will; and which will permit of the scraping blade being readily removed, when necessary.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :Figure 1 is a front elevational view.
of a torch equipped with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same, and Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view of the clamping device.
Referring to the construction in detail, 1 designates the torch, having the usual handle 2 and burner 3; and 4: designates the blade of the scraper 5, which is used in connection with the heating flame of the torch, after the usual manner. The blade 4 is adapted to be held at the proper angle with respect to the burner 3 through the medium of an adjustable clamping device, which is fully illustrated in the three figures of the accompanying drawings. Said device consists in a ring comprising two semi-cylindrical sections 6 and 7, connected to have tight frictional engagement with the torch 1 through the medium of ordinary screw bolts 8 and 9, that pass through enlargements 10 and 11 formed at the respective ends of the ring sections 6 and 7 as indicated in Fig. 2. The ring section 6 has formed integrally therewith a fixed jaw 12, which with the movable jaw 13 is adapted to clamp and hold in position the blade 4 of the scraping tool, as shown. The jaw 13 is pivot-ally mounted on the jaw 12 through the medium of a pin 14 that has bearing in the lugs 15, that are formed integrally with said fixed jaw 12. The jaws for holding the blade 4; are adapted to clamp the blade therebetween through the medium of a setting jaw 16, which has screw-threaded engagement in an extension 17 of the movable member 18, and which bears with frictional engagement against the inner face 18 of the fixed jaw 12 (see Fig. 3).
In order that the scraping edge of the blade 4 may be set and held at the proper lateral positionwith respect to the heating flame, the supporting clamp is constructed with an integrally formed and inwardly disposed ledge 19, that projects from the fixed jaw member 12, and when in applied position said ledge 19 rests upon the edge of the top 20 of the torch body, and in this position prevents the clamping ring 6 and 7) from the possibility of slipping downwardly on the torch, which would otherwise likely occur through constant use of the scraping tool. It is to be understood, of course, that any tendency to turn of the clamping ring is prevented by tightening on the screw bolts 8 and 9 to the required degree.
By holding the scraping tool to the heating torch, as herein shown and described, it will be readily apparent to those skilled in the art that paint or other coating on a surface may be readily removed with a result-ant v smooth surface, as distinct from being rough or chafed, as would otherwise occur, were the scraping tool not held uniformly and at the same angle with respect to the heating flame. And there is the further advantage that the heating and scraping of the surface may be done in one and the same operation, and by substantially one and the same tool.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of my invention, and there fore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
What I claim is 1. The combination with a torch and scraper, of a device for holding said scraper on said torch and at the proper angle thereto; said device comprising a clamp holding the blade 01": said scraper and having frictional engagement with the torch body, and capable of having angular adjustment thereon, and a member on said clamp engaging with the top of the torch for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination With a torch and scraper, of a device for holding said scraper on said torch and at tht proper angle thereto; said device comprising a clamping ring secured to the torch body, clamping jaws on said ring holding the scraper, and a proectin led 'e on one of said 'aws en a uw 1.
