FIG.5
CONRAD BAUER, OF KNOXVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROLLING SCREEN.
Specification of Letters Patent.
ratent anov. 12, 1912.
Application filed August 25, 1909. Serial No.--514,494.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it known that I, CONRAD BAUER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing a't Knoxville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Rolling Screens, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
This invention relates to screens, especially to rolling screens of the slat type, for windows, doors, awnings, and the like. Its primary object is to provide a screen of this character, in which the slats may be turned or adjusted for the admission of light and air, and it consists, generally stated,"in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth.
I will now describe my invention so that others skilled in the art to which it appertains may understand and construct the same, referring to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmentary front elevation showing my invention as embodied. in a screen for a window or similar opening; Fig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary rear elevation showing the slat tilting mechanism; Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the tilting mechanism as mounted within a casing; Fig. 4 is a view taken on the line 4-40f Fig. 3; Fig. 5 is a similar view taken on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3; Fig. 6 is a similarview but showing the slats tilted or swung to open position as distinguished from Fig. 5; Fig. 7 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 77 of Fig. 5; and Fig. 8
" is a view corresponding with Fig. 3 but showing the manner of shifting the slats for locking thereof against turning or swinging.
In describing my invention, the reference numerals 2 indicate a series of slats mounted together in parallel relation by means of the suitable flexible connecting device 3 which may be carried by a suitable. take-up or winding roll, as indicated by the numeral 3 in Fig. 2, at the top of the window frame or other frame-work 4. This flexible connecting device comprises the links 5 to which the. slats are pivotally connected as at 6. In the drawings only one side of the screen is shown and therefore only one point of the screen is provided with the flexible connector. A flexible connector may be mounted along each side of the screen therefore, extra long slats; the slats by reason of such central or intermediate pivotal support would be prevented from sagging.
In rolling screens of the slat type, the ends of the slats are guided in the process of rolling by means of channel members or other suitable guides arranged at each side of the window-frame or other frame-work. I have indicated,.-in my present-device such a guideway or channel by the reference numeral 7. Itcomprises the members 8] which are pivoted at 9 to the upright bar 10 carried by the framework 4:, and are provided with the extending arm 11 which has pivotal connection with rod or bar 12 by means of which, through vertical movement of said rod or bar 12, the members 8 may be shifted in unison for shifting or tilting the slats as will be described below. Heads 13 are carried by ends of the slate and are adapted to be received by the members 8. These heads 13 are fixedly carried by the slats so that when the members 8 are swung or tilted the slats will in turn be likewise tilted. Withthe shifting bar 12 in the position shown in Figs. 3, 5, and 7, that is, against the upright bar 10, which acts as a stop to limit the movement of the bar 12, the members 8 are directly in alinement with one another, thereby forming a passageway for the heads 13 when the shutter or screen is caused to be raised or lowered in the process of rolling. The manner of shifting the members 8 by means of the rod or bar 12 is clearly illustrated in Fig. '6 wherein the slats are shown as being shifted by the downward movement of the bar 12, to sub stantially a horizontal position from the vertical position thereof shown in Fig. 5.
In'Fig. 8 the head 13 of one slat is shown as engaging the member 8 of the next ad jacent slat while still in engagement with its respective member .8. By shifting the slats to this position an 'eflectual lock is provided for the slats 2, that is, the slats cannot be swung or tilted until each head 13 is caused to be brought back into engagement with J. member 8. It will be apparent that with this construction the screen or shutter may be partially lowered and the slats of the suspended portion of the screen tilted or swung to open position, provided the heads 13 have been brought into direct engagement with the members 8.
The operation of my device will be read ily understood from the foregoing description of my invention.
It will be apparent that many changes may. be made in the construction shown without departing from my invention and I do not therefore limit myself thereto.
The advantages of my invention will be readily appreciated by those skilled in the art.
The device is simple, inexpensive, and durable, and by reason of its compactness may be applied to an ordinary window frame or other frame-work.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In a screen, the combination of slats, flexible means for connecting the slats together, a head carried by an end of each slat, pivotally mounted members adapted to receive the heads, and means for shifting the members, whereby the slats are caused to be tilted.
2. In a screen, the combination of slats, means for connecting the slats together, heads carried by the ends of the slats, members pivotally mount-ed and adapted to receive the heads of the slats, arms carried by the pivoted members, and means engaging with the arms, for rocking the pivoted memhere.
3. In a rolling screen, the combination of slats, means for connecting the slats together, means for raising and lowering tlie screen, heads carried by the ends of the slats, a series of pivotally mounted members adapted to receive and constituting a guide for the ends of the slats, and means for rocking the members.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
