To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, IVILLIAM S. WIT'IEN, a citizen of the Uni-ted States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hand- Carts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawm s.

Fly invention relates to hand-carts, and has for its object to provide a new and improved hand-cart suitable for use in the transportation of dirt and other materials, and which may be easily dumped when desired to discharge its load. I accomplish this object as illustrated in the drawings and as hereinafter described.

What I regard as new is set forth in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved cart, showing in dotted lines the dumping position of the box or bed, one wheel being removed; Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail, being a partial sectional view illustrating one of the front corners of the box; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail, being a partial vertical section showing the rear end of the box; Fig. 4. is a plan View; and Fig. 5 is a rear elevation.

Referring to the drawings,-6-7 indicate the upper and lower members, and 89 the front and rear members of the sideframes of the cart, said members being preferably made of gas-pipe suitably joined tomembers 67 are parallel with each other and are con nected at their rear ends by the rear member 9, which is vertically disposed. At their forward ends they are connected by the member 8 which is inclined forward and upward, as shown in Fig. l. The side frames are connected at their forward ends by a cross-member 10, also of gas-pipe, as shown in Fig. 4, said member being in substantially the same plane as the upper members 6 of the side frames,-it being understood that the two side frames are alike.

ll-l2 indicate upper and lower members, respectively, which connect the rear ends of the side frames, as shown in Fig. 5, said members 11-12 being also of gas-pipe.

13 indicates a rear support or standard, which is formed of gas-pipe bent to V-shape, as shownin Fig. 5, its ends being uppermost and connected with the vertical memor they may be connected way. I thus form a frame rectangular in plan View, which surrounds the bed or box 14. of the cart, as best shown in Fig. 4:.

1516 indicate supporting-wheels mounted on the axle 17 which is suitably supported by or connected to the lower members 7 of the side f 1 and 4. The axle that it turns about the axle 17 as an axis, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l. The bed 14 is a box rectangular in shape and open at its front end.

18 indicates thesides of the box, which, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, are curved in the arc of a circle of which the axle 17 is the center.

19 indicates a latch, which is pivoted at its upper end on a pivot 20 secured to the box 14 and extends downadapted to engage the cross-member 12 when the box is in its normal position, so as to hold said box in such position. The upper end of the latch 19 projects above the pivot 20 and is beveled, as shown at 22 in Fig. 3, so as not to interfere with swinging the lower end of the latch out from under the cross-member 12. Normally the latch 19 is held in engagement with the cross-member 12 by gravity, as shown in Fig. 3.

23 indicates an end-gate, whichis pivoted at its upper end upon the cross-bar 10 and hangs pendent therefrom. Said end-gate is provided with curved sides 24, which are in alinement with the sides of the box and are adapted to fit closely against the curved ends thereof when the box is in its normal position, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. At its lower corners the end-gate is provided with locking-plates 25, the rear edges of which are beveled, as shown at 26 in Fig. 2, said beveled faces being adapted to be engaged by pins 27 projecting laterally from the lower rear corners of the sides of the box, thus drawing the lower edge of the end-gate forward and locking the sides thereof tightly in contact with the sides of the box. It will be apparent that when the box is in its normal position and is locked in such position by the latch 19, the end-gate will also be locked in operative position.

28 indicates handles carried at the ends of bars 29, which are pivoted at their front ends in line with or upon the axle 17 at the sides of the box and extend upward and rearwardly therefrom, as shown in Fig. 1. This arrangement of the handle bars is such that said bars extend in a substantially radial line with respect to the axle; and when the bars are pivoted and adjustable, as hereinafter referred to, such relation is sustained irrespective of the positions of adjustment of the bars. Said bars are held in position by locking-pins 30 which pass through perforations 31 in the vertical bars 9 of the side frames and through slots 32 in the bars 29. Thus the height of the bars 29 and of the handles 28 may be adjusted as desired. 33 indicates a crossbar, which connects the rear ends of the bars 29 adjacent to the handles 28, as best shown in Figs. 1 and 4. By this construction the operator may adjust the handles to the desired height and wheel the cart readily from place to place. In operation usually the operator may press against the crossbar 33 with his body while he pulls on the handles 28, thus obtaining a better purchase in pushing the cart. When he desires to dump the load, he releases the latch 19 and raises the rear end of the bed, thereby automatically releasing the end-gate which may swing forward away from the bed and provide a wide opening for the discharge of the load. When the cart is not in motion, it is supported by the standard 13. By pivoting the handle-bars in line with the Wheel-axles, the power of the operator in pushing or pulling the cart is applied to the best possible advantage, and the operator is enabled to handle the cart more easily.

Some of the improvements herein described may be applied to carts other than hand-carts, and the claims, therefore, should be construed accordingly.

That which I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is,-

1. In a cart, the combination of an axle and wheels, a frame comprising side frames mounted on said axle, and means connecting said side frames together, a bed pivotally mounted upon the axle between said side frames, an end-gate supported by said frame and cooperating with said bed when the latter is in operative position, and handle-bars connected with the axle and with the frame.

2. In a cart, the combination of an axle and wheels, a frame comprising side frames mounted on said axle, and means connecting said side frames together, a bed pivotally mounted upon the axle between said side frames, an end-gate supported by said frame and cooperating with said bed when the latter is in operative position, and bars pivoted in line with the axle and connected with the frame.

3. A. hand-cart, comprising an inclosing frame, supporting wheels therefor, a tilting bed supported by the wheels, a swinging end-gate supported at its upper end by the frame and adapted to swing outward at its lower end away from the bec, said end-gate having sides cooperating with the sides of the bed to form a closed box, and handlebars pivoted in line with the wheel axles and connected with the frame.

4. A hand-cart, comprising an inclosing frame, supporting wheels therefor, a tilting bed supported by the wheels, a swinging end-gate supported at its upper end by the frame and adapted to swing outward at its lower end away from the bed, said end-gate having sides cooperating with the sides of the bed to form a closed box, and handlebars pivoted in line and adjustably connected with the frame.

5. In a cart, the combination of an axle and wheels, a frame comprising side frames mounted on said axle, and means connecting said side frames together, a bed pivotally mounted upon the axle between said side frames, and an end-gate pivotally supported by said frame and cooperating with said bed when the latter is in operative position, said end-gate having side extensions adapted to aline with the sides of the bed and abut against the adjacent faces thereof to form a substantially closed box when the bed is in operative position.

6. In a cart, the combination of an axle and wheels, a frame comprising side frames mounted on said axle, and means connecting said side frames together, a bed pivotally mounted upon the axle between said side frames, an end-gate pivotally supported by said frame and cooperating with said bed when the latter is in operative position, said end-gate having side extensions adapted to aline with the sides of the bed and abut against the adjacent faces thereof to form a substantially closed box when the bed is in operative position, and means carried by the bed for holding the end-gate in operative position.
