DUMP|NG-WAGON.-
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1906.
Application filed A gus '7 1905. Serial No. 273,154.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that 1, DAVID M. ROWE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oglesby, in the county of Lasalle and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dun1pingVVagons; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in dumping-wagons and it consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
The object of the invention is to provide a wagon of this character which will be simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, very strong and durable in use, and easy and convenient to operate.-
The above and other objects which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood are accomplished by the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of my improved dumping-wagon. Fig. 2 is a vertical longi tudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view, and Fig. 4 is a per spective view of the under side of one of the intermediate bottom sections of the wagon;
Referring to the drawings by numeral, 1 denotes my improved dumping-wagon, which comprises a body 2, mounted upon a runninggear 3, which may be of any desired construction. As shown, the running-gear 3 comprises a reach-bar 4, which connects the front and rear axles 5 6, upon which are mounted supporting-wheels 7. The front axle is pivotally mounted in the usual manner and has connected to it the draft tongue or pole 8.
The body 2 of the wagon comprises two parallel vertical sides 9 and two inwardly and downwardly inclined ends 10, which latter are removably held in position between parallel cleats 11, provided upon the inner faces of the sides 9. The lower edges of the ends 12 are adapted to rest upon cross-beams 13, which are secured upon the front and rear bolsters 13, as shown. The bottom of the body 2 is formed of a plurality of parallel longitudinally-extending swinging sections. As shown, 1 preferably provide four of these sectionstwo outside sections Mend two intermediate sections 15. The outer sections 14 are hinged, as shown at 16, to the lower portions of the inner faces of the sides 9 and are adapted to swing downwardly and outwardly, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 3 of the draw ings. The intermediate sections 15, which are preferably slightly broader than the side sections, are secured upon parallel longitudinally-extending shafts 17, which are mounted in the cross-beams 12, as shown. Secured upon the front ends of the shafts 17 are handlevers 18, by means of which the sections of the bottom are operated. These levers 18 directly operate the intermediate sections 15, and the latter operate the side or outer sections 14 by means of curved arms 19, which are secured upon the sections 15 and are adapted to engage the sections 14 to elevate and support the same in their closed position, as willbe readily understood upon reference to Fig. 3 of the drawings. It will be seen that when the sections of the bottom are in their elevated or closed position the levers 18 will be vertical, as shown in full lines in said figure, and that when said levers are swung downwardly and outwardly the sections will be tilted to their open position. (Shown in dotted lines.) When the levers are returned to their normal position, the arms 19 will engage the sections 14 and elevate and support the same. Any suitable means may be provided for securing the levers in their vertical position. As shown, suitable latches 20 are provided upon a cross-bar 21 at the front end of the wagon-body.
The construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings. It will be seen that the wagon is of very simple, strong, and durable construction, so that it may be manufactured at a comparatively small cost and will not be likely to get out of order.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is--- 1. A dumpingwagon comprising a body, a section hinged to one side of the same, a shaft, a section secured upon said. shaft, an arm upon the last-mentioned section adapted to engage said hinged section to elevate and support the same, and means for operating said shaft, substantially as described.
upon said intermediate sections adapted to engage said outer sections to elevate and sup- I 5 port the same, levers upon the forward ends of said shafts and locking devices for said levers, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- 2o nesses.
DAVID M. ROWE.
