UNITED STATES PATENT Grrrcn.
JOSHUA J. PERCIVAL, OF SPEEDWELL, VIRGINIA.
FIRE-TONGS.
Speciiication forming part of Letters Patent No. 103,920, dated June 7, 1870.
To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, J OSHUA J. PERCIVAL, of Speedwell, in the county of Wythe and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Tongs; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accom-V panying drawing, forming part of this speciiication.
The drawing represents a side View, partly in section, of my improved tongs.
This invention has for its object to overcome the deficiencies of tongs which are produced by the lateral play of the shanks.
It is well known that from use and wear all tongs become loose at the joints, and thereby more or less useless, as the ends will then slip past each other, failing to hold anything be tween them.
In order to avoid this, I have secured a curved rod, A, to one of the shanks, B, of the tongs, so that it iits through an aperture in the other shank, G. The curve of the rod A is an arc of a circle, which is described from the pivot a as center. The rod will keep the shanks B C always in line, and will effectually prevent all the aforementioned difeulties. In cross-section the rod may be of suitable shape and size. The rod will not in the least interfere with the operation of the tongs. The slipping of the lower ends will, by the intermediate bracing, be absolutely prevented.
I am aware that a patent was granted toV joint.
