UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CLARENCE SCOTT, OF STERLING, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO JOHN H. LAWRENCE AND EDWIN IE. LAWRENCE, BOTH 0F STERLING, ILLINOIS.
DOOR OR GATE HOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 20, 1912.
Application filed March 1, 1912. Serial No. 680,894.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE Soon, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Sterling, in the county of Whiteside, State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door or Gate I-Iooks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to hooks or hasps for doors and the like, and has for its object to provide a simple and efficient structural formation of hook, wherein are combined the feature of great lightness with stiffness to resist lateral stress or flexure, and which in addition is adapted to afford ease and freedom of movement upon the attaching staple, all as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1, is an elevation of a door hook embodying the present invention. Fig. 2, is a detail transverse section on line mm, Fig. 1.
Similar reference numerals indicate like parts in both views.
Referring to the drawings, 1 represents the main body of the hook or hasp, which is formed at one end with an approximately right-angle extension 2 having a tapering free end, and which is adapted for engage ment in the usual staple 3 on the fixed door or gate post. At its other end said main hasp body 1 is bent or turned into an eye 4 adapted for engagement with an attaching staple 5 on the door or gate.
The general construction so far described is usual to the ordinary wrought met-a1 hook or liasp now in general use, and the novelty of the present improvement lies wholly in the formation of said hook of a bar of metal having a lozenge or diamond shape in crosssection, as clearly illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
With the described construction or'formation of the hook, great lightness may be attained in that the special cross-sectional form affords great resistance to lateral stress or fiexure, and at the same time the attaching eye will have a double countersink opening to aflord great freedom of movement to the hook upon its attaching staple, without undue play or lost motion between the parts.
As illustrated in Fig. 1, the central portion of the main body of the hook will be twisted, to provide a convenient hand grip in the manipulation of the hook in actual use.
Having thus fully described my said invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A door hook provided with an attaching eye at one end and an angular extension at the other end, and formed from a single bar of metal that is lozenge or diamond shape in cross-section, the opening of the attaching eye being of a double countersink form, the sharp edge of the hook arranged to bear against the inner side of the staple, substantially as set forth.
Signed at Sterling, Illinois, this 27th day of February, -1912.
CLARENCE SCOTT. Witnesses:
JOHN ROYER, ALLAN SIEGLINGER.
