`TOI-IN J'. ALVORD AND FRANK KARSITZ, 0F BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT.
BUTTONHOLE-SCISSORS.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, JOHN J. Anvouo and FRANK Kansirz, citizens of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttonhole-Scissors, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to button hole scissors provided with means to regulate the extent of inward movement of the arms of the scissors.
The object of our invent-ion is to provide novel and simple means, which may be quickly and easily adjusted to regulate the extent of inward movement of the arms of the scissors.
In carrying out the invention, a pair of button hole scissors are provided, having the hilt or body portion of one blade formed with a longitudinal slot, within which is disposed a longitudinally extending shaft. This shaft has its outer portion flattened and disposed within the slot and is further provided at its free end with an enlarged apertured head for receiving the pin which pivotally connects the blades of the scissors. This shaft has its outer portion, disposed between the arms of the scissors, formed cylindrical and externally screwthreaded to receive an adjusting nut, which engages the arms of the scissors to regulate the extent of their inward movement. In this construction, the pin serves the double function of pivotally connecting the blades in the ordinary manner and also pivotally holding the shaftin the longitudinal groove. This construction is very simple and provides a device which is highly capable of fulfilling its function.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pair of button hole scissors provided with the novel adjusting means. Fig. 2 is a similar view of one of the blades of the scissors, the adjusting means being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4L is a similar view taken on line 4--4 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the blades of a pair of button hole scissors provided with the ordinary openings 3. These blades have hilts or body por- Specication of ,Letters Patent.

tions 4 and 5 respectively, carrying arms 6, which are provided with the ordinary eyes 7. The blades 1 and 2 are pivotally conneeted by a transverse pin or screw 8, passing through the hilt or body portions l and 5. The hilt or body portion 4l only, is provided with a longitudinally extending groove 9, which converges outwardly toward the arms 6. The inner end of the groove 9 leads into a circular opening or recess 10, which surrounds the screw 8, as shown.
The numeral 11 designates a shaft having an inner smooth flattened portion l2, carrying an enlarged apertured cylindrical head 13, surounding the pin 8 and fitting within the circular recess 10, as shown. The flattened portion 12 of the shaft 11 ts within the outwardly converging groove 9. Attention is called to the fact that the portion 1Q and head 13 of the shaft 11 are of the proper thickness to be flush with the surface of the hilt or body portion 4. The outer portion of the shaft 11 is screwthreaded, as shown at 111, for receiving an adjusting nut 15, which may be provided with a milled portion 16. Attention is called to the fact that no additional means are employed to secure the shaft 11 to the scissors, the screw S serving that purpose. The blades and their hilts are not increased in thickness or materially altered, nor in any way perceptibly weakened.
It is believed that by the present construction, the cheapest possible adjusting means are provided to regulate the extent of inward movement of the arms of the scissors.
Having thus described our invention, we claim 1. A button hole scissors of the character described, comprising blades carrying arms, an element passing through portions of the blades to pivotally connect them, olie blade being provided with a groove extending longitudinally thereof and terminating about the element, a shaft disposed within the groove and having one end thereof apertured to receive the element, and an adjusting nut having screw-threaded engagement with the outer portion of the shaft to engage the arms carried by the blades.
2. A button hole scissors of the character described, comprising blades having hilts provided with arms, a pin extending through the hilts to pivotally connect the blades at this point, one hilt only being provided with a groove extending longitudinut mounted upon the outer cylindrical screw-threaded portion of the shaft.
In testimony whereof We aiX our signatures in presence of tWo Witnesses.

nally of tlie sanie and diverging` outwardly toward the arms and leading at its opposite end into a sulostantiall7 circular recess which Surrounds the pin, a shaft having a flattened inner portion vvliioh is disposed Within the longitudinal groove and carries a substan-v tially circular apertured head to receive the pin and be positioned Within said circular lNitfnesses: recess, said shaft having an outer cylindrical E. R. SUTLIFF, screw-threaded portion, and an adjusting A. M. BUCK.
