To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC PILES, a citizen of the United States, resident of Yankton, in the county of Yankton and State of South Dakota, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Leggings; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my legging as applied. Fig. 2 is an outside plan view of the legging, as adjusted for a small ankle. Fig. 3 is an inside plan view of the same. Fig. i is a detail fragmentary view showing the parts adjusted for use with a small ankle. Fig. 5 is a similar view, with the parts adjusted for a large ankle. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6-6, Fig. 4, the lacing being removed. Fig. 7 is a section on the line 7-7, Fig. 5, with the lacing removed. Fig. 8 is a section on the line 8-8, Fig. 7.

The invention has relation to improvements in leggings, having for its object to provide improved means for adjusting the size of the lower portion of the legging to the ankle of the wearer.

The invention consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts as hereinafter set forth.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, the numeral 1, designates the legging, which is composed of two longitudinal sections 2, 2, united by a longitudinal seam 3, and having along the adjacent free edges 4, 4, thereof a suitable fastening connection 5. The seam 3, uniting the legging sections, terminates at a point 6, intermediately of the length of the legging, and below said seam, said sections have longitudinal free edges 7, 7, one of which is provided with a flap extension 8, which extends beneath the free edge portion of the other section and is arranged to span an interval 9, between the free edges 7, 7, when the legging is adjusted to fit a larger ankle.

The free edge portion 7, of the legging section 2 of which the flap extension forms a part, is infolded longitudinally at 10, to form in connection with said flap, a longitudinal pocket 11, at the inner side of the flap, the seam 3, uniting the legging sections being extended down as shown at 3, along the inner margin of the infold 10, to unite the material of the flap extension with the material of the legging section of which it forms a part and to form the pocket. The free edges 7, 7, of the legging below the seam 3, are provided with suitable fastening devices, preferably a lacing connection 12, engaging a double series of eyelets 13, 13, located along said edges, one of said series of eyelets 13, opening into the pocket 11. In adjusting the legging to fit a small ankle the free edge portion 7 of the legging section 2 is designed to extend within said pocket with the double series of eyelets one back of the other in substantial alinement and the lacing connection securing the parts in this position. In adjusting the legging for a larger ankle the lacing connection is arranged as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings and spread to the required degree to fit the ankle, the flap 8 being located in and filling the interval between the spread edges 7, 7.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A legging comprising longitudinal sections, a seam uniting said sections at the upper portion thereof, said sections having lower free edges below said seam, capable of being spread apart to fit ankles of different sizes, one of said legging sections having a flap extension and a longitudinal pocket located within its free edge between the same and said flap and at the inner margin of the flap, and the free edge of the other section being capable of fitting within said pocket to suit an ankle of small size, a double series of eyelets engaging said free edges, one of said series of eyelets opening into said pocket, and a lacing engaging the eyelets.
