ADJUSTABLE "WAISTBAND FOE GARMENTS.

T all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MILTON S. ERLANGER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable \Vaistbands for Garments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to adjustable waist bands for undergarments, and has for its object to provide garments in general, and especially those garments which now have elastic strips inserted along their seams with a simple, inexpensive and an efficient means for adjusting the waist band.

With these ends in view the invention consists in the details of construction and combination of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals refer to like parts in all the views :-Figure 1, is a side elevation of a part of the garment with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2, is a detail sectional view along the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3, a sectional view taken at right angles to the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4:, a sectional view similar to Fig. 8, showing a modification, and Fig. 5, a View similar to Fig. 2 of said modification.

1, indicates the material of the body of the leg of a pair of drawers; 2 the well known elastic strip inserted in said leg, as shown; and 3, the waist band to the garment. In this invention, not only is the strip 2, extended up to the point 4 at the top of the waist band, but it is also doubled down to the point 5 at the bottom thereof to form the fold 6, and is then doubled inwardly and upwardly and back on to the fold 6 to form the fold 7, as shown. The parts 6 and 7 may be left unattached, but are preferably se cured together at any point 8, along the fold 6, thus leaving a downwardly opening pocket 9 between the upwardly extending portion 10 of the strip 2 on the inside of the wait band, and the downwardly extending fold 6 on the outside thereof.

The waist band 3 of the garment is of a double thickness of material, and both plies are cut away where the elastic strip 2 is Specification of Letters Patent.

inserted, as best shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The portion 10 of said strip 2 is secured at each edge to corresponding portions of the inner ply of the band 3; and the portions 6 and 7 of said strip 2 are likewise secured at each edge to corresponding portions of the outer ply of said band 3. If desired both the inner and outer plies may be stitched through the corresponding edges of the parts 10, 6 and 7, by simply continuing the rows of stitchings ll up through said parts.

On each side of the fold (5, l preferably provide one or more eyelets 13, or other means through which a suitable cord or fastening let may be passed, in order that the waist band 3 may be adjusted at will and secured in its adjusted condition. In the instance shown this may be readily accomplished by tying the ends of the cord or string l l together.

In Figs. at and 5, instead of passing the eyelets and cord through both thicknesses of the waist band, they are passed through only I the outer layer of material, and the body of the cord is concealed between the parts, as shown. In such case, of course, the continuity of the stitchings 11, should they be extended upwardly as disclosed above, would have to be broken as at and 16 in order to allow the cord 1a to pass therethrough.

In all cases it will be observed that by the simple expedientof extending the strip upwardly, downwardly, and then upwardly again to form the parts 10, 6 and 7, there are provided three thicknesses of elastic material at the place in the waist band where it is most needed, thereby providing a much stronger elastic section than when only one thickness is present, and this-with only a trifling addition to the cost of manufacture. It will also be observed that in all cases the cord let furnishes a soft and flexible inexpensive means to further adjust and secure the waist band; and that the arrangement of parts shown in Fig. 4 serves to not strip 2 below the fold 5. come Within my invention to terminate the strip 2 at the fold 4, and to secure the folds 6 and 7 to the garment, as indicated, as Well as to so terminate said strip and omit the folds 6 and 7. Therefore I do not Wish to be limited to the exact disclosure, except as may be required by the claims.

\Vhat I claim is 1. A garment having a Waist band composed of a plurality of thicknesses of material, and an inserted elastic strip having an extension passing up on one side of said band, down on the other to form a fold, and up against said fold to form a pocket; holes through one of said thicknesses on each side of said fold, and a string passing through said holes and between said thicknesses, substantially as described.

2. A garment having a Waist band; an inserted piece of elastic material in said band provided With a plurality of thicknesses; perforations on each side of said material, and a string passing through the same, substantially as described.
