NIELS MATHIAS THORVALD OLSEN, 0F NEENAI-I, WISCONSIN.
BOOT AND SHOE CLEANING DEVICE.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, NIELs MATHIAs TI-IonvALD OLSEN, a citizen of the Kingdom of Denmark, residing at Neenah, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boot and Shoe Cleaning Devices, of which the following is a specication.
This invention relates to boot and shoe cleaning devices and its object is to produce ay device of this class that is durable and efficient in operation and that automatically adjusts its brushes to several sizes of shoes.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in the following specification, pointed out in the claim and illustrated in the accompanying drawing which forms a part of the specification and in which` Figure l is a plan of the device. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Like reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I provide a pair of vertical side walls 2 which may be secured to the ioor by suitable fastening means 1. Near the front end of the device I provide a pair of oppositely disposed curved supports 3 extending from either wall toward the opposite wall and supporting between them a toe brush 4. Back of the toe brush a pair of oppositely disposed side brushes 5 are supported by pins 6 which protrude through the side walls of the device and uponwhich springs 7 abutting the inner surface of the walls are arranged to yieldingly keep t-he side brushes the maximum distance from the walls. This arrangement makes the side brushes automatically adjustable to the different sized shoes that may be forced between them.
8 is a perforated plate extending from side to side of the device and freely resting upon shoulders 9 9 formed upon the relatively inner surfaces of the side walls 2. The shoulders 9 may be highly polished and likewise the contacting surface of the plate Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Application filed September 22, 1911.
Patented July 23, 1912. Serial No. 650,722.
8 or the shoulders may be provided with roller bearings upon which to receive the plate 8 if preferred (not shown) to obviate friction. The shoulders 9 extend from the front end of the device back approximately three-quarters of its depth while the length of the plate 8 is approximately one-half that extent.
The plate 8 forms a rest for the sole of the shoe being operated upon; the shoe being placed upon this plate which latter is reciprocated thereby upon its supports, the shoulders 9, to bring the shoe, while in motion, in contact with the toe and side brushes. This operation will cause the side brushes and toe brush to remove such dust, dirt or foreign matter from the shoe as may be adhering thereto and to administer a polish to the shoe.
9 is a lateral guide arranged above the plate 8 and secured to the wall 2 to help retain the plate in position.
The side walls, toward the rear end of the device, are cut down to a level with the shoulders 9 and are made flush with those shoulders at their termination and upon the reduced side walls a perforated heel scraper 10 is secured.
This device will remove mud or other foreign material from the heel or sole of the shoe.
What I claim is In a boot and shoe cleaning device7 a pair of side walls provided with oppositely disposed shoulders and terminating in a reduced portion, a toe brush connected to the front end of the said walls, adjustable side brushes oppositely disposed secured to the side walls, a perforated plate movably arranged upon the shoulders of the said side walls and a perforated heel scraper fastened upon the reduced portion of the said side walls.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto afIiXed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
NIELS MATHIAS THORVALI) OLSEN.
