To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that I, HENRY J'. JACOBS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sofa-Beds, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to sofa beds or convertiblecouches of that kind having a seat hinged so that it can -be swung forwardly to an inverted posit-ion in front of the stationary 'couch'frame, and a folding spring bed bottom which, together with the mattress supported thereby, folds beneath the couch seat When the latter is in its normal position 1 and is unfolded Vto form a full width bed when the couch seat is inverted. Two features are essential in these sofav beds to make The folding bed bottomor mattress support should be so constructed and mounted that when it is unfolded or extended for use as a bed, it will be supported far enough above t-he inverted seat and the couch frame to adapt the spring fabric to, yield to the extent necessary to insure an easy, comfortable bed;
and the bed bottom when folded beneath the couch seat should afford ample space between its sections to accommodate the folded mattress. Sofa beds-of this type which secure these results have been patented, but.
either the folding bed bottoms thereof have been made in three sections, or the constructions, in notherrespecterhave been complicated and expensive and more or less 0bjectionable in use. Ina copending application a sofa bed of this sort is described in which the outer section of the folding bed bot-tom is xedly, mounted on the underside of the iinged seat at an inclination thereto in a w y to secure the'desired results.
The object of this invention is toproduce a comfortable desirable and serviceable sofa bed of this type in ,which like results are attainedby. a simple and' inexpensive construe tion in which the outer section of the folding bed bottom is movably mounted on the underside of theh-inged seat, so as to be supported horizontally above the seat when the latter is invertedv and to assume an in- 4olined'position under t-he seat in the normal position thereof.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 1s a sectional elevatlon of a sofa bed e1nbodying the invention, showing the saine closed for use as a couch.
specification of Lenen; raient. 1 Patented Jun@ 25, 1912, Appncamnmea February 7, 1912. .serial no. 676,148. l
Fig. 2 is a frag mentary sectional elevation of the bed botf tom and mattress folded. Fig. 3 is a fragn'ientary longiti'idinal` section on. line 3-3, Fig. 6. Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation of the sofa bed opened for use as a bed. Fig. 5 isy a fragmentary elevation, partly in section, of the inverted seat showing the supportingleg therefor. Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan partly in horizontal section of the sofa bed opened.
Like reference characters refer to like parts inthe several figures.
The stationary frame A of the conch and lthe hinged seat B may be constructed and hinged together in any usual orsuitableway, adapting the seat to be turned forwardlyfrom the normal position, shown in Fig. l, in which it forms the seat of the couch, to the inverted position in front of the stationary frame, shown in Fig. et.
Acouch of the davenport type is shown in the drawings and the frame consists of 'upright end pieces n. connected atthe lower portion by front and back rails a a?, and by: a stationary upholstered back a3. In the construction.shown the `front and back rails a a2 ofthe frame are connected by end rails a4, thus forming a rigid rectangular base frame 5to.` which-theseparate upright end pieces (L are attached, but while this conu structionis' preferred, it is not essential The couch seat B preferably consists, as shown, of 'a rectangular'box-like wooden frame containing suitable springs b which e yform aspring bottom for 'the upholstereil seat pad or covering b2. The seat is hinged to the stationary frame by Ordinar y:hinges C connecting the lower edge. of the-iront board of the seat frame to the uppery edge,
of the front rail c of the stationary frame.
The folding bed bottom consistsof a twopart folding rectangular metal frame and" the usual resilient fabric D ofvfiexibly connected links, or other formation, which is at tached at opposite ends to the folding ends of the frame. The folding bed bottom frame 1s composed of an outer section d and an inner section al', each of substantially Uv shape, the extremitiesl'of the end bars 'of which are` hinged together and to suitable rigid standards or supports E projecting from the seat frame at the ends of the front or hinged side thereof, in such amanner as` to adapt the bed bottom frame to fold under 'tiff the seat and the outer section thereof to also swing upwardly toward the seat to the inclined position, 'shown in Fig. l, when the seat is turned toits normal seat-forining position. In t-he construction shown the .two sections of the bed bottom frame are hinged to each other by -a pair of common hinges'e andthe outer. section d is Vhinged i to the standards E by another' pair of com# mon hinges e', but' anyother suitable hinge vconnections which will permit the above mentioned movements of the frame sections i 'can be employed. The standards E shown i `consists of pieces of wood rigidly fastened to the front board `of the'seatfrainerand braced by corner-blocks e2, but they can be constructed and rigid secured tothe seat frame in an`y other suitable way.
Swinging links F pivoted to the ends of the seat frame and havingl studs or rollers entering slide ways f on-.the endr bars of the outer bed bottom sect-ion, or which are otherwise s'lidably connectedd therewith, coperate with Athe standards Ein supporting said outerbed bottoni section in a horizontal position above the-couch seat when the seat lis inverted. The links F are moved to and retained in the upright supporting position by suitable means, such as springs f connec'ting them to the seat frame. In swinging the couch seat from 'its inverted position to its normal position, cani shaped portions of the links F strike projections f2 on the ends of the couch frame and are thereby swung upwardly Vout of their Aholding posi. tion, and act to swing the outer bed bottom the inner section d" of the bed bottom is supported beneath the outersection Z by its hinge connections with the outer section and by suitablebrackets il on the stationary frame, as shown in Fig. 1. When the seat is vini'ferted the supporting links -G are raised by the links g to the position shown in Fig. it, and support the inner bed bottom section in a horizontal position in the saine planev as the outer section. The inner vbed bottom section can, however, be supported by any other suitableconnections permitting it to kissume the positionsv mentioned.
The couch seat can be supported in itsV normal and inverted positions by 'any'suit able means. Forjfnstance, blocks z onits ends rest on the ends of the stationary frame tos`upport it in the normal position, and a leg I pivotally or slidably mounted in a socket z" ateach end of the couch seat su-pports it in the inverted position. When inverting the seat these legs swing to an uplright position and slip up into the sockets whereby they lare held rigid and support the seat, and wlieii the seat is swung back to its narinal position the legs swing back out of sight between the ends of the seat and the ends of the couchframe.
K represents springs attached to the standard-E and to the. end ofthe couch frame for assisting in raising the couch seat when swinging it to and from its normal position. These springs, or any other suitable means for the purpose, can be employed or not, as preferred.
By employingy a Vfolding bed posed oftwo sections with the outer section mounted asdescribed'on the hinged couch seat, and the inner section hinged to the outer section and mounted to raise and lower in the couch frame, ample space is left be- ,tweeii the sections, when folded, for the folded mattress, and when'the bed bottoni is unfolded or extendedfor use as a bed, it is supported well above and free frointhe frame of the couch seat and the front rail of the stationary frame, so that-there `is nothing to prevent the bottom fabric from yielding to the extent necessary to insure an easyy comfortable bed. When the bed bottom is folded the sections of the fframe diverge at an angle from their hingeV connections, but the bottom fabric between the end bai-s of the frame will spread and contorni to the folded mattress, as indicated in Fig. 2, and the mattress does not have to be crushed or compressed at the fold. The short intermediate. section heretofore used in the bed bottom frame is. therefore, not necessary. lt
bottom coinwill be observed that. by'the constructiondescribed the couch seat can be made with an ordinary box frame of woodconuected by ordinary hinges to the stationary couch frame, and the bed bottoni frame has but two sections. The structure is composed of' but few parts `and hinges and connections of special design are not required. Since the bed bottom fabric is attached to the ends of the bottom .frame by springs, which are under considerable tension, the. fabric exerts a strong inward pull on the folding ends ofthe bottom frame, which is, of course, increased by'the weight of aA person on the bed, and in the three piece constructions special provision has to be made to prevent the ends of the frame from bendingfinwardly and causing the fabric to sag. l/Yith the bed bottom frame composed of the two hinged sections, one hinged to rigid parts on the couch seat as described, the ends of the frame.
are effectually held against the inward pull of the fabric.
