This invention relates to an improved by the thumbwhich is so peculiarly formed UNITED STATES PATENT owner.
To all whom it may concern:
Be itknown that I, WILLIAMM. Hocron' KISS, citizen of the United States, residing at New Rockford, in 'the county of Eddy and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash Holders and Locks,.of which the following is a specification.
sash holder and'lockTandhas for one of itsobjects to provide a light and'siinpl de vice of this character adaptable particularly to storm sashes which are hinged at their upper ends in the casin Another object of t is invention is to provide a sash lock which is positive, and which comprises but a single lever operable as to secure the holding members from separation when closedand thereby firmly re tain the sash within the casing.
For a full understanding of the invention and the merits thereof and also to acquire a knowledge of the details of construction, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation partly in section of the frame having a storm sash therein and showing the application of the im-; proved holder thereto; Fig. 2 is a detail enlarged view of the holder extended; Fig. 3 is a bottom edge view of the same; Fig. 4 is a detail edge view'of the hinged joint between the swinging arms, taken from the oppositesideto that. which is disclosed in Fig; 3; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the improved holder partially closed; Fig, 6 is a detail view of the attaching strap and its hinged connection with the outer arm; Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the holder closed; Fig. 8 is a bottom plan view of the same; and, Fig. 9 is a detail perspective view of the lock-lever.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the'following description and indicated in all the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawinglO designates a window casing having a storm sash 11 hinged at its upper end therein. The casing 10 is provided with the usual outside sash stop 12 against which the storm sash 11 rests when closed.
The improved holder or fixture comprises.
a fixed bracket in the form ofan angle iron Serial No. 610,872.
The fixed bracket carries a lock-lever 22 which is rounded at its inner end to conform to the width of the arm l tland which tapers outwardly into a lip 23 which is curved out from the arm 16 about the edge oft-heoutstanding flange of the fixed bracket. The lnner enlarged end of the lock-lever is provided with a central opening through which the rivet 15 passes to hingedly support the lock-lever. The lock-lever 22 is provided at its rounded portion with an arcuate locking flange 24 which is in the form of an over- PatentedApr.30,=1912.
having a base 13 secured against the'inner hanging lipturned in at its outer edge to engage over the adjacent ends of the arms 16 and 17 when the same are closed or brought together. The locking flange 24 is so positioned upon the lock-lever 22 that when the lip 23 is swung down or against the sash-11 at one side of the fixed bracket the locking.
When it is desired to close the sash the adjacent ends of the arms..16' and 17 are raised to separate the shoulders 19 and to thereby contract the opposite ends of the I. arms. When the arms 16 and '17 are brought hold the same from separation.
It is readily seen that this improved holder and lock may be employed in connection with. any members which are adapt-- ed to be separated so that the same can be held apart andcan be locked in a closed position when desired. It will also be observed that all the parts of this improved sash holder and lock are so peculiarly formed that they may be cut from sheet metal and,
may be oppositely formed it so desired.
It will be noted from Fig. 9 of the draw ings that the forward end of the-locking flange Qet is turned out away from the body of the lever 22 to form a projection 25. The projection 25 provides an inner inclined or cam face adapted to engage over the rounded end of the outer arm 17 in order to draw the same into a closed position should the sash 11 not fit snugly Withinthe casing 10. The set screw 18 is employed for binding the arms 16 and 17 together in various angles so as to hold the storm sash out at various angles with respect to the casing.
Having thus described the invention,wh.at is claimed is:
A combined sash holder and lock com-.
prising coacting arms hingedly united at one end and adapted to--be pivoted at their other ends respectively to a window frame and to a sash, the outer ends of the arms be ing semi-circular and the pivots concentric to the rounded ends, a locking lever swinging upon the terminal pivot of one of the arms, and an overhanging lip extending latera-11y from said lever and concentric to said rounded ends and bearing over the rounded ends of both arms when the same are disposed side by side.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature in presence'of two Witnesses.
