JOHN H. SHAW, OF NEWYHAVEN, CONNECTICUT,,ASSIGNOR TO SARGENT & COMPANY, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, A CORPORATION OF CONNECTICUT.
BRACKET FOR DOOR CHECKS AND CLOSERS.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 26, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. SHAW, of the city and county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brackets for Door Checks and Closers and Similar Articles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part thereof.
This invention relates to brackets for door checks and closers adapted for application to doors or door jambs, and has for its object the production of a universally adjustable brac :et to suit the varying conditions which arise in the application of door checks and closers. To this end, the bracket is made in two or more parts, which are adapted to be adjusted longitudinally, and is rovided with a depending spindle to which t e arm or link connecting the check or closer to the bracket is pivoted. This depending pin is pivotally associated with the main portion of the bracket so that it may project laterally at varying angles. The bracket therefore may have both a longitudinal and lateral adjustment.
To these and other ends, the invention consists of the several improvements and combinations of parts set forth and claimed hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 represents a door check and closer connected with a bracket embodying my invention shown in front or vertical elevation. The check is shown applied to a door with a covered top or upper edge, Fi 2, a top view of the same, Fig. 3, a vertica elevation of the bracket, shown in detail and enlarged, Fig. 4, a bottom view of the bracket, Fig. 5, a transverse vertical section on line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6, a top view of one portion of the bracket.
In all figures, similar letters of reference represent like parts.
The part designated in the drawings by the letter A is intended to represent a portion of the door, and B a part of the door jamb. O is a door check and closer, which is secured to the door by screws D, or other suitable means.
The spindle E of the door check and closer projects above its casing, and as shownin Fig. 2 is squared to take into a corresponding perforation in the connecting arm F. By this means, the particular direction in which the arm F projects from the spindle may be varied, but it is herein shown at such an angle to the plane of the door that the link G connecting its outer end with the bracket will lie substantially parallel to the plane of the door when the door is closed. The link G may be formed of two parts G and H in well known manner.
The bracket is provided with an attaching plate K, with screw holes I, for screws J for securing it to the desired part, as the door jamb (Fig. 1).
To the attaching plate K is secured or formed integral therewith, a supporting plate L having screw holes for the reception of screws M. An extension plate N, with side pieces 0, is adapted to fit and slide on the under side of the support L. The eX- tension is provided with longitudinal slots P through which the screws M project. W hen the extension N has been brought to its desired position it is held in place by the screws M and washers R bearing on its under side and binding it against the support L.
To the outer end TN of the extension N, a plate S is pivoted at T to turn in a plane substantially at right angles to that of the movement of the extension N. The pivoted plate S is provided with a curved slot U for the insertion of a screw V adapted to take into the end W of the extension N so as to hold the plate in any desired position. A spindle X depends from the late S and to it is pivoted the art H of the link G, as shown more particu arly in Fig. 1. By this construction, and particularly the depending spindle X, the check and closer may be placed on that side of a door, shown in Figs. 1 and 2, where the arm F and link G will swing under the j amb of the door.
As the depending spindle X may project some distance from the door jarnb, the parts may be arranged, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the link G joining the connecting arm F of the closer with the bracket may extend parallel to the plane of the door. The arm and link will not then project out into the room.
By means of the adjustability of the extension N on the support L of the bracket, the bracket may be lengthened or shortened to fit varying thicknesses of door j ambs, while by means of the pivoting of the spindle carrying plate S on the bracket the angle at which the spindle projects from the bracket may be varied to suit different forms of doors. As
shown in Fig. 1, the bracket is secured to'the jamb of a door which is curved instead of horizontal to correspond to the rounded upper end of the door and the spindle X projects at an angle of substantially 45 from the plane of the bracket.
The invention is not intended to be limited to the exact details of construction, but
What I claim and desire to secure .by Letters Patent, is zr 1. The combination with a door and a door casing; of a door check and closer and a bracket, one of which is located on the door and the other on the casing, said bracket being adjustable longitudinally; a rotary spindle in said check and closer; and mechanism connecting said spindle and bracket, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a door and a door casing; of a door check and closer and a bracket, one of which is located on the door and the other on the casing, said bracket being adjustable laterally; a rotary spindle in said check and closer; and mechanism connecting said spindle and bracket, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a door and a door casing; of a door check and closer anda bracket, one of which is located on the door and the other on the casing, said bracket being adjustable longitudinally and laterally; a rotary spindle in said check and closer; and mechanism connecting said spindle and bracket, substantially as described.
4. The combination with a door and a door casing; of a door check and closer and a bracket, one of which is located on the door and the other on the casing; said bracket having telescoping parts; a rotary spindle in the desired position, substantially as described.
6. The combination with a door and a door casing; of a door check and closer and a r bracket, one of which is located on the door and the other on the casing; a rotary spindle in said check orcloser mechanism connected with said spindle; anda depending spindle on said bracket adapted to be attached to said connecting mechanism, substantially as described.
7. The combination with a door and a door casing; oia door check and closer and a bracket, one of which is located on the door and the other on the casing, said bracket being adjustable longitudinally; a rotary spindle in said check or closer; an armadapted to project. from said spindle at varying angles; and mechanism connected to said arm and bracket, substantially as described. In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand on the 19th day of June, 1908.
