Description

W. TREWHELLA. SNATGH BLOCK.
APPLICATION FILED JAN.16, 1911.
1,022,569, a I Patented Aprig, 1912.
a subject of the King of siding at Trent-ham, in the WILLIAM TREW'HELLA, 0E TEENTHAM, VICTORIA, AUSTRALIA.
SNATCH-BLOCK.
To all whom it my concern: 7
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM. TREWHELLA,
Great Britain, re-
State of Victoria, Commonwealth of Australia, have invented Improvements in Snatch-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to that class of snatch-block in which the side plates or cheeks are fixed rigidly to the sheave spindle and provision is made for the insertion or removal of the rope by means of ahinged cross bar at the outer end of cheeks. It has been usual to attach the cross bar by a hinged joint to one cheek in such a manner that it will open outwardly and to secure it to the other cheek when closed by means of a removable pin or bolt.
The objects of my improvements are to do away with the necessity for a removable pin or bolt, to obtain greater strength by transferring the strain direct from thecross bar to the cheeks and to reduce the cost of manufacture by enabling the cheeks to be stamped from sheet metal instead of being cast or forged as heretofore.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings, whereof;
Figure 1 is a side elevationof the improved snatch-block with the cross bar open. Fig. 2 an end elevation thereof partly in section with the cross bar closed, while Fig. 3 is part end elevation showing the cross bar released. Fig. i is a vertical section through the upper part of the snatch-block showing the removable cross bar.
, According to this invention the side plates or cheeks 1, 2, of the snatch-block are each formed with an elongated hole or closed slot 3, 4, and thecross bar 5 is provided with two shoulders (z and b so that when the baris drawn outwardly into'its'operalive position said shoulders bear against the ends 6, 7, of said slots 3, 4, and the strainis transferred direct from said cross bar to the cheeks without the interposition of any pin or bolt. The cross bar may be re1novable as in Fig. 4, but it is preferably attached to the snatch-block in such a manner that it may be readily drawn into its operative position. As an example one end of Specification! Letters Eatent. Application filed January 16, 1911. Serial No. 602,928.
-bar to swing Patented Apr. a, rare.
the cross bar may be formed with a small hole 8 and a. pivot 9 is passed loosely through same and two small lugs 10,10, formed on the outside of one cheek 1, as shown in Figs. ngand 3. The slots in the cheeks are longenough'to allow the cross inwardly into the open position, as in Fig. Means are provided to prevent displacement of the cross bar which may be formed with a central raised portion 11 between the shoulders a, b, and which fits-between the cheeks and maintains the cross bar in position while with the same object in view said-bar may haveeither one or two upturned lugs 12, 12, about its ends,-
which engage the outside of the cheeks adjacent the ends of the slots therein, and cooperate with the raised portion to .hold the cheeks rigid relatively to each other; i
The pivot lugs 10, 10, are preferably formed by stamping them integral with the cheek and then bending them to a right angle therewith.
The cheeks are each formed on their edges with pairs of horns 13, 13, the projecting ends of which extend laterally and over the flanges of a sheave'lfi to guide the rope in the groove of the she-ave 16, and said cheeks are fitted upon sided portions 14, 1%, of the sheave spindle 15 so as to be, rigidly fixed thereto.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my. said invention and in What manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is A new article of manufacture, a sheet metal snatch block, comprising a pulley, an axle therefor, a stamped, piece fixed on the pulley axle on each side of the pulley and formed with guide horns having their ends extending over the flanges of the pulley, said cheek pieces having longitudinal slots closed at their ends, one of said cheek pieces having integral lugs bent at right-angles thereto on each side of the s.ot,,a pin mounted in the lugs extending across the slot, a stamped, sheet-metal cross piece of substantially the same width as the slot pivoted on said pin between the lugs and having straight shoulders near its ends to bear against said closed ends of th: slots,
sheet-metal check said bar being formed with a central raised portion extending from one cheek to the other, forming interior abutments for said cheeks and with an upturned lug on the free end to engage the outside of the other cheek piece, whereby said pieces are locked together.
1J1 testimony whereof I have hereunto se my hand 1n presence of two subscribing wit nesses.
WILLIAM TREWHELLA. 'VVitnesses: I EDWARD WATERS,
