This invention relates to belt buckles for personal wearand has torits objectprovision oi a construction which will tacilitate the assembling of the gripper and the lever or bail which is engaged with the attaching end of the belt, will effectually retain the parts in assembled relation, and will securely hold the belt to which the buckle is applied. The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing and is hereinafter fully described, and it consists in certain novel features particularly point ed out in the appended claims.

The front plate 1 is of the usual or any preferred form having side flanges 2 provide-d with suitable openings to receive the ends of the pintle or pivot pin 3 which are upset against the out-er sides of the flanges, as indicated'at 4. In Figs. 1, 2 and 5, the pintle is shown as a straight pin inserted through openings 5 in the end walls 6 ot' the gripper, and the ends of the lever bail 7 pass through the gripper between the top of the same and the pintle. In the form shown in Figures 1, 2, 4t and 5, the gripper is an integral structure stamped from a single blank of sheet metal and includes parallel side walls 8 and 9 constitutingclamping jaws to grip the belt against the rear face of the front plate 1, and a top 10 connecting the side walls. In the side wall 9, at the top 10, are formed slots 11 to admit the sides of the lever bail while in the wall 8 are openings 12 alined with the slots 11 to receive the ends of the lever bail. After the side members of the lever bail have been inserted through the alined slots and openings, they are swaged at points betweenthe side walls of the gripper to produce the lateral fins 13 with a groove or recess 14 to span the pintle. The extremities of the lever bail are upset against the wall 8 as shown at 15, and the pintle 3 is inserted through'the openings in the end walls and the flanges 2 and secured. The fins 13 and the upsets 15 effectually prevent separation of the gripper and the lever, and the concave recesses or grooves in the lever permit the pintle to, be set near the top of the gripper so that the said top may be brought close to the front plate. It will be noted that the pin 8 is disposed eccentrically, that is, closer to the wall 8 so that the wall 9 wil be caused to more tightly grip the engage-d end of the belt in the event that said end should tend to slide through the buckle in a direction away from, the bail and the attached belt end. The slots 11 and the openings 12 are of such dimensions as to prevent the swaged and upset lever ends separating from the gripper while providing play which will permit the gripper to rock upon the pintle to effect the desired clamping of the belt.

In the form of the invention shown in Figures 6, 7 and 8, there is the same front plate as seen in Figure 1. The gripper 16 however, does not have the end walls 6, but end portions of the top are separated by slits from the main portion of the top and are rolled to form sleeves or hubs 17 encircling the ends 18 of the pintle. The intermediate portion 19 of the pintle is offset or depressed to define the equivalent of a recess accommodating the lever bail and bringing the axis of the pintle close to the top member 20 so that thelatter may come within the plane of the edges of the side flanges 2. The wall 21 corresponds to the wall 8 of the firstdescribed form and the wall 22 corresponds essentially to the wall 9 although shorter, andv corresponding slots and openings are provided to receive the end and side members of the bail 23. The side members of the bail are swaged near their ends to provide the fins 24 but the recesses below the fins are not necessary.

In Figures 9, 10 and 11, there is the same bail 23 with fins 24 as in Figure 6, and the lOO same gripper as in Figures 2, a and 5. The pintle 25 has its greater portion disposed in the same plane with the side members of the bail, just as in the arrangement shown in Figure 8, but is provided adjacent its ends with kinks or bends 2G to pass around the sides of the bail.

Having fully described my invention what I claim new and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent, is:

1. In a belt buckle, the combination of a front plate, a pintle carried on the rear of the front plate, a gripper mounted eccentrically on the pintle, and comprising side jaws and a top and a lever bail having the ends of both its side portions engaged through both sides of the gripper between the top of the same and the pintle, the. e:; tremities of the bail being fixed to the ad j acent side jaw of the gripper.

2. In a belt buckle, the combination of a front plate, a pintle carried on the rear of the front plate, a gripper mounted eccentrically on the pintle, and comprising side jaws and a top and a lever bail having its end portions engaged through the sides of the gripper between the top of the same and the pintle, the bail having lateral ins upon its side members between the sides of the gripper.

3. In a belt buckle, the combination of a front plate, a pintle carried on the rear of the front plate, a gripper mounted eccentrically on the pintle, and comprising side jaws and a top and a lever bail having its end portions engaged through the sides of the gripper between the top of the same and the pintle, the opposed surfaces of the bail andthe pintle being one recessed with respect to the other.

i. In a belt buckle, the combination of a front plate, a pintle carried on the rear oi the front plate, a gripper mounted eccentrically on the pintle, and comprising side jaws and a top and a lever bail having its end portions engaged through. the sides of the gripper between the top of the same and the pintle, the bail having lateral tins upon its side members between the sides of the gripper, and the opposed surfaces of the bail and the pintle being one recessed with respect to the other.

5. In a belt buckle, the combination of a rent plate, a pintle carried on the rear ide oi? the front plate, a gripper mounted ccentrically on the pintle, and comprising tide jaws and a top and a lever bail having its end portions engaged through the sides of the gripper between the top of the same and the pintle, the ends of the bail being upzjet against the gripper and the sides or the bail having lateral fins between the sides of the gripper and being recessed in the surface presented to the pintle.
