PAUL MEYER, 0F SOLINGEN, GERMANY, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO MAX HOLDEN, OF SOLIN'GEN, GERMANY.
SCREW-WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PAUL MEYER, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Solingen, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Screw- Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved screw-wrench of ratchet like action, of which the novelty consists in that the open key of the same engages a six-cornered nut on five sides and that any spring or similar auxiliary means are omitted.
In the accompanying drawing, Figures 1 and 2 show side views of the improved screw-wrench with closed key and open key respectively.
The open key of the wrench possesses two fixed jaw faces a: and b. and three pivotal jaw faces 0, cl, 6 which are integral with each other and fulcrumed on a bolt f. The outer jaw face 0 is an extension of thelateral jaw face (Z while the jaw face e forms fiche foot of the latter and the base of the The improved screw-wrench can be placed sidewise over the nut in any position of the same, as the pivotal jaw member is turned aside, when pressed against the nut, so far that the nut can enter the key. The key is then immediately closed around the nut by the latter pressing against the base jaw face 6. The more the key is closed, the firmer it engages the nut, a slipping-off of the same Specification of Letters latent.

being impossible, due to the fifth jaw face 0. Upon turning the wrench back, the jaw faces a and b are removed from the nut, while the pivotal jaw member still embraces the nut .on three sides. On the pivot of the movable member an abutment w is provided, which permits a turning-back of the fixed jaw faces a and I) so far only that the key can turn over the nut, whereby the ratchetlike action is obtained.
Beneath the base j'aw face 6 a projection g is provided, which in the closed position of' the key engages a corresponding recess h in the body of the key and which thereby serves to compensate the lateral strain exerted by the operation of the wrench.
I claim:
In a screw-wrench of ratchet-like action for six-cornered screw-nuts, in combination, an open key having a recess and consisting of two fixed jaw faces and three integral pivotal aw faces adapted to engage the nut on five sides, and a projection on said pivotal jaw face member adapted to engage said recess upon the key being in closed position, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
