To all whom it may concern: v

Be it known that I, WALTER H. McCon- NAUGHY, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsyh Vania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in. Crumb Collectors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relatesto a crumb collector, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device for collecting crumbs and other matter from a table cloth or other surface without srarring tearing or otherwise injuring the same.

Another object of this invention is to furnish a collecting tray with a trap door that will retain the contents therein while the tray is being carried, and with a door that permits of the contents of the collecting tray being quickly removed.

A further object of this invention is to provide a collecting device of the above type that is durable, easy to manipulate and susceptible to any desired ornamentation.

- With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a perspective view of the crumb collecting device. Fig. 2 1s a plan of the same partly broken away. Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view of the device with the door or lid thereof closed. Fig. =1 is a similar view showing the door or lid partially open. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of device, andFig. 6 is a longitudinal sectional view of the same.

A crumb collecting device in accordance with this invention is made'of light and durable metal and comprises a casing having end walls 1 having the lower forward edges thereof rounded, as at 2 and the upper rear edges inclined, as at 3. The end walls 1 are connected by a top plate 4 and a front wall 5, said front wall having the lower edge thereof bent or curved rearwardly, as at 6..

The end walls 1 are connected by a rear wall 7 and a bottom plate 8, the forward edge of said bottom plate terminating at the rounded lower edges .of the end walls 1 to cooperate with the curvededge f the front wall 5- in providing an opening 9 through which crumbs or other matter are adapted to pass in entering the collecting device. lecting device adjacent to the upper inclined edges 3 of the end walls 1 is a rod 10 having the outer ends thereof pivotally mounted upon the ends of the side flanges 11 carried by the lid 12. The lid 12 intermediate the ends thereof has a resilient catch 13 adapted to engage a keeper 14, carried by f extend into the collecting device beneath the rear edge of he top plate 4.

Pivotally mounted in the flanges 11 adjacent to the free edge of the lid 12 is a lid opening device, comprising a rod 16 having the ends thereof provided with eyes or handles 17.] The rod 16 within the device is provided with crank portions 18 and intermediate the crank portions 18 are curved portions 19. The curved portions 19 normally maintain the crank portions 18 against the inner side of the lid 12, but said rod can be rotated to swing the crank portions 18 downwardly against the bottom plate 8 to force the lid 12 open, as best shown in Fig. 4. When the rod 16 is rotated the lid 12'is slightly sprung but immediately resumes its normal position after the lid opening device has been operated. The end walls 1 are cut away,vas at 20 to provide clearance for the rod 16.

Arranged longitudinally of the device and in the end walls 1 is a rod 21 and pivotally mounted upon this rod is a longitudinal trap door 22 having the lower edge thereof weighted, as at 23 whereby the trap door will normally engage the bottom plate 8. The end wallsl below the top plate 4 have apertures 24 and pivotall mounted in said apertures are the inwardly bent ends.

25 of a bail 26 having a central handle 2''? 1 9 and by occasionally elevating the device the trap door- 22 will swing open and allow the crumbs and other'matter to enter the rear part of the device, between the bottom plate 8, walls 1 and 7 and the lid 12. After the compartment has been filled, the lid opening device can be operated to swing the lid to an open position and allow the contents of the device to be emptied or deposited in a suitable receptacle. The curved edge of the front wall prevents said wall from injuring a table cloth, while the edge of the bottom plate 8 serves as a scraper for gathering crumbs.

In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawings there is illustrated a modification of the invention, wherein the hinged lid 12 is provided with an eye bolt 29 and connected to said eye bolt is a rigid piece of wire '30 that extends upwardly through'a screw eye 31, carried by the underneath side of the handle 27. The

upper end of the piece of wire 30 is bent to form a loop '32 that accommodates a finger of the hand holding ,the handle 27*. The piece of wire 30 can be pulled upon to open the lid 12 as shown by dash lines in Fig. 6, thus permitting of the device being opened by the same hand that holds the device. When the device is held in a vertical position and the lid opened, the contents of the device are removed by gravity, even the contents above the trap door, as said door swings by gravity.

WVhile in the drawings there are illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention, I would have itvunderstood that the structural elements such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is l. A crumb collecti-ng'device comprising end walls, a rear wall, a front wall, a top plate, a bottom plate cooperating with said front wall in providing an opening. a lid bottom plate to said casing,

2. A crumb collecting device comprising a casing having the bottom thereof provided .with an opening at the forward end thereof, a lid pivotally supported by the top of a trap door arranged in said casing and normally engaging the bottom of said casing, a bail pivotally connected to said casing, means adapted to retain said lid normally closed, and shiftable means. connected to said lid and adapted when actuated to open said lid.

3. A crumb collecting device comprisin top open and the forward end of its 'bottom open, a lid for closing the open portion of the top, means carried by the lid and'engaging with the rear of the casing fornormally maintaining the lid closed, a ba'il piv'otally connected'to said casing, shiftable means connected to said lid and adapted '"wheriactuated to open the same, otally mounted in said casin and'provided with means to prevent the dlscharge'of the collected crumbs until the lid is opened.
