To all whom it may concern; n
- Be it known that I, JosErHf A. a citizen of theUnited States of Arneriea, g and a resident o-f-Ghicago, county. of Cook,
and State of Illinois,'h ave invented certain new and useful Improvements incRecep-i tacles, of wh ch the follow ng s a, spec fication. 1
This .invention h'as for its object to pro; vide certain new and useful improvements in boxes or receptacles particularly adapted I 4 tain thel'reptaele firmly closed ithepla E is'providdn a t hm fi t mp si I I for the storage of stockionshelves. y The particular object of the inventionis :tov provide a closure for such'receptacles which will permit .the' same tob fully opened foraccess without drawing the box outwardly from the shelf for "this purpose.
The invention is seen to be illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. 1 is a perspective view'of a recep tacle constructed in accordance with the invention;
Fig. 2 is a fragmentary detail vertical I longitudinalsection of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary detail vertical longitudinal section of they same showing theclosure partly down in open position.
The receptacle may be made of any suitable material and is generally, and most conveniently, of rectangular cross-section, one end thereof being normally entirely open.
The top wall A of the receptacle projects slightly forward of the front edges of-the side and bottom walls and the said projecting portion is provided in its lower face with a longitudinal groove B, the rear wall flush with the front edges of the side walls.
Hinged in any suitable manner to the front edge of the bottom Wall C of the receptacle is one part or plate D of the receptacle closure which consists of the parts D and E hinged together along a line or pivotal axis which is parallel with the top and bottom walls of the receptacle. The said hinged connection between the plates D and E is such as to permit the same to become disposed angularly relatively to each other, as shown in Fig. 3, so that the inner portion of the angle formed thereby opposes the open end of the receptacle. The plates D and E are of such dimensions relatively to the mouth of the receptacle so that the side edge portions of said plates are adapted to Pus aga stxthaf on ed e l e-s l sjand s h t hen hei' ar d ro a how 'r ai igi att r freaedg of h P e E Will age -n theFei-" OY 311 he t e. wall A. Thus, when-said plates-i D and' eia hwia achi ae a a s relative pivotal movement and the free edge t harl Elia sn f eie eov B e s id n s r pla e will be mannered ii 1" 1i dipq lt i i j -a :1 Inl'order. to ,efiectsuch closure and main.-
ing the suitably securedto said plate Epre" elrably'abou't mid the s'id edges hereof; edadja. ed connation with deplete-D. A lever otally secured to the plate F and is,- adapted to engage the projecting spring tongue H struck from or otherwise secured'to a plate Iasuitab-ly secured to theplate D midway between the side edges thereof and adjacent. its hinged connection with the plate E. The
lever G spans the hinged connection between so I the plate D and E and when engaged with o is such as to permit said plate D to drop, down below and hang'substantially vertically from said bottom wall C, thus causing the. open end of the receptacle to be completely exposed to view and to permit the contents of the receptacle to be very readily removed without necessitating outward movement of the receptacle from the shelf or other support therefor. In effecting closure of the receptacle the plates D and E are-moved to substantially the relative position shown in Fig. 3, and upon continued pivotal movement of the plate D relative to the bottom wall C in an upward direction the free edge of. the pl'ate E will strike the front edges of the side walls of the receptacle and thereupon further continued movement of the plate D in the same direction will cause the said free edge of the plate E to move continuously upwardly until it is engaged in the groove B. At this time the plates D and E will be flush with each other and thereupon a pivotal movement of the latch lever G to engage the spring tongue will lock the plates D and E in said flush position and against, pivotal movement relative to each other, thus holding thein firmly in position to complete closure of the receptacle.
In order to open the receptacle it is only necessary to turn the latch lever vGr out of engagement with the tongue H, whereupon the closure will drop by gravity to its lowermost "position, as
Will be obvious.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of the invention in the accompanying drawings, it will be understood, of course,"
' as defined inthe appended claim.
I claim as my invention: 7 l a A' receptacle having side walls and a. top and bottom Wall, said receptacle open at one end and said top and bottoms projecting" beyond the ends of the sidewalls, there be ing a groove in the lower face of the projecting end portion of the top wall,"a' closure for said openend comprising two p-lates,. one thereof hinged to the projecting end portion of the"bottom wall thereofhinged along one edge to the free end of the first-named plate the combined s that such embodiment may 'bechanged and varied in details of construetion without departing from the invention and the other a V eeaase length of said plates being such that when the side walls 'of'said receptaclewhen in closed position, said plates adapted to be angularly disposed with relation to each other as they are moved to closed position and brought flush with each other as the free end ofthe second-named plate strikes the ends of the side walls'tofthereby project said free end into said groove, and, means for maintaining said closure member in said position comprisinga latch'memberpivotally-secured to one of said plates, 'a coacting latch element rigidly mounted on the other plate and adapted to engage the free end portion of said pivoted member 'as the latter is turned to position spanningthe hinge connection between said plates, to thereby coact with'sai'd endsgof said side wallsgto prevent relative pivotal movement of saiddisengagement of said free end plates and of said secondJ'glate from said groove.
