To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that l, Warren ld. PADLEY, residing at Coolidge, in the county of Hamilton and State of lilansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tour ists Tents, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable shelters ofthe tent type, and it primarily has for its object to provide a tent that is particularly designed for use as an automobile shelter, although its use is not limited there to.
Generically the invention resides in the provision of a "tent' wherein the framing is so constructed that the greater partthereof can be made of pressed thin metal, and wherein means are provided for quickly bringing the cover over the frame when set up or uncovering the frame, as the case may be.
In its more detailed nature the invention also resides in the provision of two collapsi ble end frames formed of parts hinged together and having braces to hold the parts in their proper relative positions, the end frames being joined by longitudinal. struts or braces that connect with the end frames at the joint thereof and assist the braces in sustaining the parts of the end frames in --the1r proper positions.
The invention also provides a roll upon which the covering is wound and which will act as a brace for joining the end frames, reels being provided upon the end frames upon which cables are wound, the cables passing over guards on the end frames and connecting with the covering on the roll whereby the covering maybe drawn upon the frame, the reels being connected together by a removable rod which also serves hill the application of the invention as an autoas a brace between the end frames.
. In addition to the foregoing, the invention also residesin those novel details of construction, combination and arrange "ment of parts, hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which: a
- Figure 1, is a perspective viewillustrating mobile shelter. Fig. 2, is a detail perspec tive View of one end of the tout the covering being rolled up. Referring now to the accompanying drawings in which like numerals and letters of reference indicate like parts in all of the figures, it will be seen that the improved. tent comprises a pair of end frames 1 joined together by longitudinal braces or struts 20, hereinafter again referred to. The frames 1 are composed of the end braces 2 and the intermediate members 3, which members are,
hinged together through their ears 5, by
hinge pins or bolts 4 on which rollers 33 are journaled. Pivoted at 16 to the intermediate sections 30f the end frame is a brace it having a shoulder 15 at its free end and laterally projected parts 15 to ride in a slotway 12 of a guide 11 that is secured at 13 within the channel member 2 of the end frame, the channel member 2 having slots 6 to permit passage of the catches 7 of a latch 8 that is secured at 9 to the member and has a finger engaging portion 10, by means of which the latch may be lifted out of gagement with the brace 14.- The endframe members 2 and 3 adjacent to their joints 4: have apertures 17 to receive the fingers l8 of the heads 18 of the struts 20 that connect the end frames together at their joints. The fingers 18 are separated a distance sufficient to receive the rollers 33, as clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. Each finger 18 has a notch 19 and a beveled end adjacent thereto whereby the fingers 18 may be inserted into the apertures 17 and goes through notches 19 to interlock with the end frame members.
Each longitudinal strut 2O may be composed of an L-iron and joined at 22 with the heads 18, an adjustable joint being provided by forming the members 20 with slots'21 through which the connecting screws or bolts 22 may pass as clearly shown in Figs. 8 and 9 of the drawings. a
The sections 3 of the end frames are joined together by a brace 30 which is of similar form to the brace 14 and has a shouldered end 32 and is pivoted at 31, as clearly shown in Fig. 16 of the drawings, the shouldered end 32 operating in the slot-way 24 of a guide 23 secured to one of the end members 3 and 25, a latch 26 having latch stops 27 is secured to one of the sections 3 and coiiperates with the shouldered end 32 of the members 30, the latches 26 as well as those designated 8 are resilient ones, and the latch 26 is secured at 28 and has afinger engagaing portion 29, as shown in Fig. 16 of the drawings.
Each roller 33 has a groove 34 in which the cable 51 hereinafter again referred to is held by resiliently mounted guide rollers 35 having corresponding grooves 36 and mounted on shaft portions 37 of a rod which at 42 passes through apertures in the channel members 3 and is held in place by riveting at 43 or otherwise, as may be found desirable. The roller 35 is held on the bearing part 37 of the support by a washer 40 and I cotter pin 41 on one side and a plate 38 hav- 7 ing a collar 39 to embrace the support on the other side.- A spring 44 holds the rollers 35 in contact with the roller 36. Bearings 45 are provided near'the lower ends of one of the side members 2 of each end frame 1 to receive the bearing end 46 of the cover carrying roller on which the cover 50 for the tent is wound, a holding or latch member 47 being provided to retain the bearing end 46 in the respective bearing 45. A ratchet 48 is mounted on the rollerend 46 and cooperates, with a pawl 49 secured to the end frame member 2, the roller end 46 having a hollow portion to receive a crank 73, by means of which the roller maybe turned when desired. Cables 51 connected to the cover 50 pass between the respective rollers 33' and 35, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawin and wind on a drum 52 that is provide with a drum shaft 53 on which the drum 52 ismounted, the shaft 53 having bearing in the bearing parts of a clip 58 which is secured to the end frame member 2, the clip 58 having one of its bearings provided with clutch slots 59 to coiiperate with a shifting clutch member 57 that reciprocates in a slot 61 in the shaft 53 and is spring pressed to lock with the clutch part 59 of the bearing 58 by a spring 60. A short tubular member or rod 64 within the shaft 53 engages the shifting clutch member 57 to force it to release its engagement with the clutch notches ,59, when the shaft 53 is forced in the position shown in Fig. 13 of the drawings, the shaft 63 hav ing a pin 66 to fit into a slot in the shaft 53 and be engaged by a spring 56 mounted onthe drum'52, the drum 52 having end disks 54, one of which is provided with ratchet teeth 55 to cooperate with a pawl 67 that is pivoted at 68 to the end frame member 2 to prevent turning of the drum 52 in but one direction.
There are two drums 52 provided, one on each end frame and these drums are con nected together by the rod 63 hereinbefore referred to, as shown in Figs. 10, 11, 12 and 13 of the drawings, whereby'both drums 52 may be made to move in unison- The drum shaft 53 is hollow, as before stated and the outer end thereof is provided with a cross pin 62 so as to receive the forked end of the crank 73 whereby the shaft 63 with the drums 52 maybe turned together to draw the covering over the frame from the position shown in Fig. 2 to the position shown in Fig. 1.
- The cover 50 is wound on the cover carrying roller, as before stated, and its free longitudinal edge is provided with a stiffeniing rod 72 to which the cables 51 may be connected. The end flaps 69-70, in practice, are folded over, as shown in Fig. 1 when the cover is to be rolled up, and when it is desired that the end flaps be brought into use to close the ends of the shelter they may be pulled over the same somewhat in the manner indicated in Fig. 1 of the draw- %Vhen found desirable guy ropes 71 may be attached to the tent and stationed at 74 to sustain the structure, although, in prac tice, such ropes are necessary only in high winds.
In practice the entire tent may be knockdown and packed in a case 7 5, shown particularly in Fig. 19" of the drawings. In order to set up the tent the end frames are removable from the case and the sections are moved on their hinges until they assume the position indicated in Figs. 1, 2,3 and 6 of the drawings, at which time the braces 14 and 30 will automatically come into position to be engaged by the latch portions 7 and 27 of the latches 8 and 26 respectively.
to hold the end frame sections in their relative positions.' The longitudinal braces 01' struts 20 have their 18 pushed i the crank cover carrying roller and t through the apertures 17 until they spring into place with the notches 19 in engagement with the ends of the apertures 1?. The roll 46 is then placed in its hearings to, as shown in Figs. 2, it and of the drawings, and the rod 63 is inserted into the opposite ends of the shaft 53 of the reels 52 when such shafts are automatically released the clutches 57 and the latches 5d will automatically latch the shaft 63 to the respective reels. The operator then inserts the cranlt 73 into the end of the reel shaft 53 (the pawl 49 being released) and upon turning the crank 73 will wind the cable til onto the reels 52 and draw the cover of over away from the position shown in 2 of the drawings to the position shown in 1. After which, the pawl t9 may he brought into engagement with the ratchet it and the desired tension applied to the cover 50, it being understood that the pawl 61: will hold the reels from hackward movement and lreep the cover stretched taut over the frame. lint taking the tent apart the pawls are released from their respective ratchets 55, 173 is inserted in the end to of the he covering is rewound onto the cover carrying roller after which the rod 63 is removed and the roll .1-6 is removed from its hearings The longitudinal struts or hraces are retrieved hy gripping, the lingers 18 and st ueeaing thorn together l-y any suitahle ineans, say, hythe tool 76, shown in it), until the notches 19 are hrought out of engagement with the frame sections and the ,hraces 2h I removed, this the latches t3 2h myself in an way this respect.
are rnoved release the braces it and 3 13 respectively and the end frames inaythen he folded together, as shown h and it of the'drawings.
