ATTACHMENT FOR REGISTER-GRATES"FOR THE PURPOSE OF REGULATING THE UPTAKE-DRAFT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed December 27, 1909.
Patented Nov. 21, 1911.
Serial No. 535,008.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY GHARLES AB- BOTT, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing at Patterson street, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia, manufacturer, have invented a new and useful Attachment to Register-Grates for the Purpose of Regulating the Uptake-Draft; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to a simply constructed and easily attached contrivance to register grates for the urpose of enlarging or restricting the draft aperture from the grate to the chimney.
The contrivance consists of a light metal framework preferably rectangular in shape and provided in its forward part with in verted notches by means of which the frame may engage with-and ride upon the register of the grate. The rear of the frame is weighted for the purpose of canting a notched bar, attached to and forwardly proj ecting therefrom, upward against the edge of the grate curtain.
In the accompanying drawing :Figure 1 shows an ordinary register grate with the invention attached. Fig. 2 is a plan of the contrivance. Fig. 3 is a section of same on line AB Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows in side sectional elevation an ordinary register grate, while, Fig. 5 is a. similar view of a grate in which the register plate depends from the front of the grate.
The frame 1 is preferably made rectangular and wide enough to ride upon the curved register 2 of the grate 3 by means of depressions or notches 4 formed in the forward end of 1. If the frame is made of wire these depressions may be formed by bending an inverted U into the frame on each side. Attached to and project-ing forwardly from 1 is a notched bar 5, which engages the curtain 6 of the grate. If the bar be of stout wire it may be bent or folded to provide the notches for the purpose explained. A suitable weight 9 is fitted upon the back part of the frame which operates to cant the bar 5 upward, thereby insuring that it will be always in engagement with the cur tain.
When it is desired to alter the position of the register 2 of the outer end of the bar '5 is gripped and slightly depressed to disen-- gage it from the curtain, when the register may be pushed backward or pulled forward according as required to open or close the the curtain 6 and is adjustable along an arc the radius of which is equal to the distance between the pivot of the member 7 and its lower edge. In this case the frame 1 will rest on the rigid back part of the grate, while by means of the knob 8 on register 7 the latter may be adjusted to position and left in engagement with bar 5. Thus, by means of the invention the loosely hanging register 7 may be adjusted and retained without the necessity for any parts other than those that have been described.
I claim 1. An attachment of the kind indicated and comprising a frame having a weight connected therewith and adapted to ride upon the register of a grate, the attachment having a plate or bar provided with notches for engagement by a grate-curtain.
2. An attachment of the kind indicated and having notches to ride upon one part of a grate fixture and a succession of notches any of which may be brought into engagement with another part of the grate fixture,
said attachment provided with a weight to spaced side members each having a corre- In testimony whereof I have signed my spondingly located downwardly opening name to this specification in the presence of notch, a bar extending from one end of said the two subscribing witnesses.
frame in substantial aiinement therewith HENRY CHARLES ABBOTT.
and having upwardly opening notches, and Witnesses: a weight on the end of said frame opposite P. M. NEWTON, to said bar.
A. HARNETT.
