Description

S. S. WEIL. IGNITING PLUG POR. V OLATILE CONTAINERS. APPLICATION FILED MAR. e, 1911.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SYDNEY S. WEIL, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR TO STATE SALESCOM- PANY, A CORPORATION OF CALIFORNIA.
IGNITING-PLUG FOR VOLATILE CONTAINERS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 7, 1911.
Application filed March 6, 1911. Serial No. 612,656.
To all whom it may concern:
it known that I, SYDNEY S. WEIL, a cit zen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and useful Igniting-Plug for Volatile Containers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to plugs for closing volatile containers and its object is to ignlte the escaping gases from the said container when the plug is blown out by the pressure of the same. I accomplish this feature by means of the device illustrated in the accon1- panying drawing in which Figure 1 is a broken sectional View of my igniting plug attached to a container. Fig. 2 is a plan view. of the igniting plug.
The numeral 1 is used to designate a container for volatile liquids to the top of which is secured an annular threaded collar 2. A second annular threaded collar 3 is screwed into the collar 2 and has, depending therefrom, a cylindrical gauze 4 for the prevention of back-firing. A hollow plug 5 is screwed into the plug or collar 3, and is provided at its lowerend with a circular gauze 6. An annular channel 7 is provided near the top of the bore in the plug 5, said channel 7 being filled with a sulfurous or other easily ignited mixture 9 through the hole 8 after the metallic cap 10 is in position. The flange 11 of the cap 10 is of such dimension as to provide sufiicient friction to ignite the sulfurous mixture 9 when the cap 10 is blown out by the pressure of the gases within the container.
I am awarethat in the present state of the art plugs have been provided and secured with a solder of comparatively low fusion, designed to be released by the pressure of the gases which are generated by the heat which causes the metal to fuse In such cases the gases are allowed to escape into the open air or the room in which the containers are stored. These gases, which are highly inflammable, will ignite and cause a violent explosion \Vl'lull a flame or light is brought into the room and cause serious injury if not death to the person or persons in the vicinity. The device herein described will prevent} such an explosion in the following manner. When the heat in the room or apartment has generated a sufl ficient pressure of the gases in the conthe under face of the cap 10 will cause the said cap to blow out. The friction of the cap 10 against the mixture 9 will ignite the said mixture which will in turn ignite the gases escaping from the container. In this manner the gases are consumed and rendered harmless as they leave the container, the gauze disk 6 and the cylindrical gauze 4 preventing back-firing into the volatile liquids contained in the container, 1.
It is obvious from the foregoing that I have provided a means whereby the gases escaping from the container are rendered harmless.
The details of construction of my invention are so susceptible to variation that I do not wish to confine myself to the precise construct-ion shown. herein, but rather to avail myself of any modification that may fall properly within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. In an igniting plug for volatile containers, a hollow threaded plug, an internal annular channel within the plug, an outlet to the channel, a sulfurous mixture within the channel, a circular cap fitted frictionally within the plug and adapted to ignite the sulfurous mixture within the channel when forcibly removed therefrom and a circular gauze secured to the lower end of the plug for the purpose set forth.
2. In an igniting plug for volatile con tainers, a hollow threaded plug, a frictionally held cap within the plug, a channel between the cap and the plug, a frictionally ignitiblc mixture within the channel, a secondary channel between the other channeland the outside of the plug and a circular gauze secured to the plug below the said channel in the manner set forth and for the purpose described.
In witness whereof I hereunto set my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
SYDNEY S. \VEIL.
