BAG-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 17, 1911.
Application filed March 11, 1910. Serial No. 548,637.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK GIBBINs, oitizen of the United States, residing at Utica, in the county of ()neida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had'therein to the accompanying drawing.
My invention relates to a bag holder and I declare the following to be a full, clear, concise and exact description thereof, sufficient to enable any one skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters refer to like parts throughout.
The object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive, efficient bag holder more particularly adapted for use in grain mills or coal yards, where the filling of a large quantity of bags occurs daily.
The device herewith disclosed has for further objects the economy of time and of labor in filling articles of the nature described. Time is eeonomized by the simplicity of manner by which a bag may be conveniently mounted in the holder and labor is economized because of the substitution of the holder.
These objects are accomplished by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective of the bag holder and bag; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view showing certain details of construction; Fig. 3 is a plan looking down on the top of the device; Fig. 4: is a detail view of a certain part employed in the device.
Referring to the drawings more particularly, there is provided a frame consisting of an upper hemispherical hoop 1 and a lower hemispherical hoop 2 connected by a plurality of standards 3, riveted or otherwise suitably secured thereto, as by brazing or the like. Standards 3 are provided with feet 4; perpendicularly disposed to their lower ends and adapted for the better maintaining of the stability of the holder in its upright or normal position. Feet 41 may be separate pieces secured to standards 3 or may be the horizontal extension of standards 3. There is also provided, for a like purpose of maintaining the stability of the holder, ends 5 and 6, being the extensions of the termini of lower hemispherical hoop 2.
End standards designated by 3 3 are bent radially inward adjacent their upper ends, as shown more particularly in Fig. 2, in order to present an overhanging portion 7 for a purpose to be presently described. There is also provided in the standards -3 adjacent the bent portion longitudinal recesses 88 adapted for the pivotally mounting therein of latches 9-9 by means of pivots 101O passing through suitable holes in 3 --3 Latches 9 are formed of a single piece of metal and each latch comprises a handle portion 11, an upwardly projecting arm 12, and a hook portion 13, which with the arm forms a recess 1a for the more efficient securing thereto of handles 15 of the bag or sack 16. On standards 3-3 disposed on the inside and at the proper height which may be predetermined are hooks 17 secured to said standards 33 by riveting or brazing or in any suitable manner. Hooks 17 permit the insertion from below of the top edge of bag 16 and hold the mouth thereof in a convenient open position for the filling of the bag or sack 16.
The bag being filled with coal or any other desired material, may be dropped free of hooks 17 and of hooks 13 by lifting up on handles 11 of latches 9, whereby handles 15 of bag 16 slip off from their resting position 011 the hooks 13 by the force of gravity and the bag falls to the ground or floor surface thereunder. The bag may then be removed to its destination and another produced to take its place on the holder.
Latches 9 have bracket portions 12, so disposed with reference to hook portions 13, that the hook portions 13 are adapted to hold the handles 15 of bag 16 in a vertical line from the pivotally mounted portion 12. There being the added feature in this instance, of handles 11 to act as a leverage in clearing handles 15 of bag 16 off from their engaging position on hooks 13. The bent portion 7 of standards 3 is adapted to permit the convenient mounting of handles 15 of bag 16 upon hooks 13 of latches 9.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
In a bag holder of the character described, the combination of a frame open laterally and comprising an upper and a lower hemispherical hoop held in parallel planes by a plurality of standards having extended portions bent to form feet, certain of said standards provided with rigidly mounted hooks adapted to hold open the mouth of a bag and certain of said standards provided with inwardly bent portions having recesses, pivotally mounted latches in said recesses having hook portions with handles, whereby a bag held in suspended position by said pivotally mounted books, may be released, sub- 10 stantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents, Washington, D. G.
