PRINTING-PRESS ATTACHMENT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, G'IDEON E. BRANN- BERG, a citizen of the United States,'residing at Joliet, in the county of Will and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Printing-Press Attachments, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to printing presses and more particularly to attachments therefor, and has for its object to provide an attachment for job presses or other flat form presses, which will be constructed and arranged to carry the inking rollers in spaced relation to the form when they are moved in one direction.
Another object is to provide a structure of this character which may be easily attached to presses without great alteration of their form, and which will be operative by the roller carrying arms.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and it will be understood that changes in the specific structure shown and described may be made within the scope of the claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a printing press with the present invention attached thereto, with the track plates retracted, Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 with the track plates projected, the inking rollers being shown midway of their movement, Fig. 3 is a section on line 33, showing the manner of con necting the shift rods with the roller frame,
Fig. 4 is an elevational view of one of the track plates, Fig. 5 is a section on line 55 of Fig. 4 showing the mounting of the track plates, Fig. 6 is a fragmentary detail section taken horizontally through the upper guide block, Fig. 7 is a detail view showing a diflerent form of shifting device.
Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a press 10 including the usual bed 11, and the usual arrangement of roller frames 12.
As is customary, the rollers are mounted in saddles 14, which are mounted upon the usual rods 15 slidably engaged in the roller frame 12, and held normally retracted by means of springs 16.

The rollers are provided with the usual trucks 17, which in the present instance are somewhat elongated to extend beyond the outer faces of the bed, upon the forward edge portions of which they normally run.
Secured against each side of the bed there are a pair of horizontal guide blocks 18 and 19 respectively, which are spaced vertically from each other as shown and mounted upon each side of the bed for pivotal movement, there is a cam plate 20, these plates lying between the guide blocks.
A track plate 21 similar in configuration to the side of the bed is provided for each side of the bed, these track plates having forwardly directed track edges 22.
The track plates are provided with transversely extending slots 23 which receive the guide blocks 18 and 19, these slots being longer than the blocks so that the track plates are shiftable transversely of the bed 11 to project their track edges at times beyond the forward edges of the bed and into the path of movement of the roller trucks. W'hen thus projected, the edges 22 of the track plates receive the roller trucks thereupon and hold the trucks and the rollers in a shifted position in which the rollers do not engage the type face of the form.
From the drawings it will be seen that when the track plates are shifted rearwardly the roller trucks will travel over the forward edges of the bed and it is designed that the track plates shall lie in forwardly shifted position when the rollers are moving downwardly to ink the form, and that the track plates shall lie in rearwardly shifted position when the rollers are returning to the ink plate. To this end, the cam plates 20 above referred to are provided and lie in openings 24 formed in the track plates. These cam plates have upwardly directed cam portions 24 which are so arranged that they engage the forward periphery of the openings 24, and the cam plates are provided with rearwardly directed cam fingers 25 as shown, which lie in rearward extensions 24 of the openings 24. The arrangement is thus such that when the cam plates are shifted forwardly the track plates are shifted forwardly, and when the cam plates are shifted rearwardly they shift the track plates rearwardly. v
A shift rod 26 is pivoted at its lower end upon the outer face of each of the fingers 25 and, extending upwardly, has its end bent outwardly and into the path. of movement of the upper portion of the roller frame 12. A similar downwardly extending shift rod 27 is pivoted with the rods 26, and these rods 27 have their lower ends bent outwardly in position to be struck by the lower portions of the roller frames. The cam plates are thus actuated by the roller frames, as will be understood.
From the foregoing it will be seen that during their upward movement, the inking rollers will engage the form and ink it, the track plates being at that time retracted. As the rollers start down however, the rods 26 will be shifted to move the cam plates 20 and project the track plates beyond the forward edges of the bed, in which position they receive the roller trucks and thus, during their downward movement, the rollers are held in spaced relation to the type form, so that they do not ink the form. until their upward movement and thus, by causing the roller to engage the form during their mo vement in an upward direction only, the removal of ink from the form during the usual second engagement of this form by the roller, is prevented.
In the modification shown in Fig. 7, the plate 22 is provided with a circular cam re ceiving opening 52 in which there is located a cam member 53 pivoted concentrically to the opening and including a downwardly extending portion 54 engaging the peripheral wall of the opening, and a rearwardly extending finger 55 to which the arms 26 and 27 are pivoted. It is believed that the operation of this form of the invention will be understood without further description, and it will be seen that in both forms the fingers indicated at 25 and 55 lie in the plane of the plates and the arms 26 and 27 being pivoted concentrically upon these fingers, considerable lateral space is saved.
\Vhat is claimed is:
1. The combination with. a printing press including a form receiving bed, an ink supply and frames carrying inking rollers mov able over the bed, said rollers being shiftable toward and away from the bed, of means movable into and out of position to hold the rollers shifted away from the bed during their movement in one direction, and means connected with the rollers and lying in a path to be struck by said frames for actuating the roller holding means upon change of movement of the rollers.
2. The combination with a printing press including a bed, of frames carrying inking rollers movable over the bed, bed-engaging trucks carried by the inking rollers, track plates slidably mounted upon the bed for movement to project at times beyond the roller receiving portion of the bed to receive the trucks thereupon, and means including arms lying in the path of said frames to be engaged thereby for moving the track plates, at both limits of movement of said frames and rollers.
3. The combination with a. printing press including a bed, of frames carrying rollers movable over the bed, bed-engaging trucks carried by the rollers, guide blocks mounted upon the sides of the bed, track plates having slots in which the guide blocks are re ceived, said track plates being slidably upon the blocks to project beyond the truck receiving portion of the bed to receive the trucks, said track plates having openings therein, cam plates pivoted upon the bed and engaged in the openings, and arms connected to said cam plates and lying in a path to be struck by said frames at both limits of movement of the frames for moving the cam plates to shift the track plates upon the guide blocks.
l. The combination with a printing press, of roller track plates slidably mounted upon the press for movement into and out of position to project beyond the forward face of the bed of the press, said track plates having openings therein, cam plates pivoted upon the bed of the press and engaged in the openings, said cam plates being arranged to engage the sides of the openings and shift the track plates when the cam plates are moved upon their pivots, fingers carried by the cam plates in the plane of the respective track plates, and oppositely extending shifting arms pivoted concentrically upon the pivots.
