Description

J. P. HINRIGHS/ CLAMP FOR LUMBER AND THE LIKE.
APPLICATION FILED I'EZB.21, 1911.
Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN I. HINRICI-IS, OF NAPA, CALIFORNIA.
CLAMP FOR LUMBER AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Sept. 12, 1911.
Application filed February 21, 1911.
Serial No. 610,012.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN P. HINRIoHs, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Napa, in the county of Napa and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clamps for Lumber and the Like, of which the fol lowing is a specification.
This invention relates to clamps for lumber, the same being for use primarily on lumber wagons for the purpose of binding the load thereon, although it can be used to advantage on railway rolling stock, such as open cars on which lumber is piled.
An object of this invention is to protect the lumber against injurious action of a cable or binding element in order to prevent the said binding element cutting into the lumber at the corners or sides, yet permitting the said binding element to be drawn taut for the purpose of effectually holding the load on the conveyance.
A further object of this invention is to provide a guard having renewable wearing parts, which renewable wearing part acts as a guide for the binding element in order that displacement of the binding element with relation to the protecting element may be obviated.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure 1 illustrates a view in perspective of a fragment of a load of lumber showing the application of the invention thereto; Fig. 2 illustrates a perspective view of one of the protecting members.
In these drawings 4; denotes a pile of lumber and 5, 5, denote the guards which guards are duplicates of each other. Each guard comprises preferably a metallic plate of angular formation in order that the said plates will fit the top corners of a load as shown in Fig. 1. Each plate has one of its corners terminating in a lug 6 having an aperture 7 for the reception of a flexible connection 8 which flexible connection is preferably slightly longer than the width of the pile of lumber or material to which the guards are to be applied. One purpose of the flexible connection 8 is to prevent separation of the vprotecting members so that they can be carried conveniently and kept together for convenience of use. The purpose of the upturned lug 6 is to provide means for attaching the flexible connection to the plate in order that the said flexible connection may be used without marring the lumber or material to which the plates are applied for by this arrangement, the flexible connection is not pressed against the lumber or the material.
The plate is further provided with a combined guide and wear strip 9 which may be secured to the plate in any appropriate manner, here shown as being attached by screws 10 passing through the strip and having their ends embedded in the said plate. The strip is of curved formation transversely forming a trough-like way in which the binding element 11 is guided and as there is considerable friction and wear between the binding element'll and the wear strip 9, the utility of the said wear strip will, it is thought, be apparent. Should the wear strip 9 become impaired through the action of the binding member thereon, the said wear strip can be renewed. While I have shown a cable as the binding element, it is well known that chains are frequently used for the purpose of holding a pile of lumber on a conveyance so that the utility of the wear strip will be more fully recognized when it is considered that it may be used in connection with chains since the action of chains on the wear strip will be more damaging than an ordinary cable. It is on account of this consideration that the importance of the wear strip, as a part of the protecting plate or as combined therewith, becomes apparent.
I claim In a clamp for lumber or the like comprising right angled plates, a detachable Wearing strip comprising a substantially a lug, and means for connecting the said long right angled member semi-circular in plates. 10 cross section, provided on each of the said In testimony whereof, I hereunto afiix my plates, said Wearing strip being provided signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
With apertures to receive a means for fas- JOHN P. HINRICHS. tening a Wearing strip to each of the 'right Witnesses:
angled plates, one corner of each of the CHAS. E. TROWER,
plates being apertured and shaped to form B. I. CHAPMAN.
