CHARLES C. DEFENBAUGH, OF TOLEDO, OHIO, ASSIGHNOB, 0F ONE-HALF T0 FRANK W. CAUGHLIN, 0F TOLEDO, OHIO.
COMBINATION-TOOL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. $6, 1mm.
Application filed April 29, 1915. Serial No. 24,686.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, CHARLES C. DEFEN- BAUGH, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Combination-Tool; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description .of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to combination tools, and has for its object to provide a simple and inexpensive tool which will perform the functions of botha square and a line gage.
' The invention is fully described in the following specification, and a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, which is a perspective view of the tool and illustrates the manner of using the same as a line gage.
Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the long and short arms, respectively, of a square, the long arm having the customary scale marks or graduations along the outer edge thereof.
The short arm 2 is provided at its inner edge with a broadened flat surface 8, which projects in both directions from such edge at right angles to the plane of the arm 2. The surface 3 is formed, in the present in stance, by broadening the arm 2 beyond the desired inner edge line thereof, and providing a U-form of slit in the body portion of the arm with its ends extending toward and terminating at the desired point of the inner edge. The portion of the arm topics of this patent may he obtained for which extends inwardlyv beyondthe desired edge line thereof is turned at right angles in one direction and the turning of such portion causes the tongue 3 which projects from such portion and is formed by the slitting of the arm, to be turned in the opposite direction at right angles to the arm. This forms a double flange for contact with the edge of a board or other work piece to serve as a guide in sliding the square along a work piece.
The long arm 1 of the square is provided lengthwise thereof with a slot 4, one wall of which, preferably the wall thereof adjacent to the outer edge of such arm, is serrated, as at 5, to form teeth which preferably register with desired graduation marks on the square. The teeth 5 are intended to receive the point of a pencil 6, or other marking instrument, and to hold it against movement lengthwise of the arm 1 when the tool is being used as a line gage.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any specific construction, arrangement or form of the parts except in so far as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by LettersPatent, is
A square having one arm slitted adjacent to the inner edge thereof to form a tongue, the portion of the arm carrying the tongue being bent in one direction at right angles to the arm with the tongue extending in the opposite direction at right angles to the arm to form integral edge flanges.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name to this specification.
CHARLES C. DEFENBAUGH.
