JOSEPH H. HICKS, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, A SSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND GEORGE H. CHINNOGK, OF SAME PLACE, ASSIGNORS TO IGNATIUS RICE, OF NEW YORK CITY.
SPECIFICATION.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY GONGERN:
Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. HICKS, of the city lof Brooklyn, in the countyY of Kings, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement inpHair Combs; andI do hereby declare that the following ference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which` Figure 1 is a side view of a comb constructed according to my invention.
Figure 2 is a transverse section of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan view of the same. v
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all dthe figures.
This invention relates more especially to com bs made of hard vulcanized rubber, and it consists in a novel construction of the comb with a strip of metal inserted in a longitudinal groove in the back thereof, and 'secured in place by rivets passing transversely throug l strengthened against all liability of being broken, vWithout materially changing it from the neatness thereof. y v v p v To enable others to understand the nature and construction of my invention, I will proceed to describe it ck comb, andb indicates the back thereof. A deep, narrow groove is formed A represents a straight ba ck, and in this groove is inserted a longitudinal strip,
longitudinally in the top or upper surface of the said ba e, of brass, iron, steel, or other suitably stift` metal; the said strip being of the same size and shape as the groove in which it is placed. Transverse holes are made through the back b and through the metallic strip e ed metallic rivets z', which are'headed upon both ends,
at suitable distances apart, and in these holes are plac stiffness to the back of the comb, andthus prevents` it .from being brokenby ads of the rivets and onek edge of the strip e are of the comb or materially change The strip e givesstrength and ordinary accidental causes; and inasmuch as only the he exposed to view, they do not detract from the neatness of the appearance the same. t
What I claim as new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is Acomb, having the strip of metal e and rivets z' in combination with each other, and with the longitudinal groove in the back of the comb, substantially as herein set forth for th'epurpose specified. v
