Abstract

A hot lump detector in which a hot lump detection head for detecting the electrical signal generated by the near-infrared light generated by a hot lump is installed on the side of path where the hot lump passes through, and the distance between one end of the hot lump and the installation position of the hot lump detection head is detected according to the output of the hot lump detection head; which is characterized in comprising: a thermometer placed apart upstream of the hot lump detection head ; temperature measuring means for measuring the hot lump based on the output of the thermometer ; detected temperature estimation means for estimating the temperature of the hot lump at the arrival at near the hot lump detection head; amplification means for amplifying the output signal of the hot lump detection head; preset means for setting a detection reference value corresponding to the predicted temperature from the detected temperature estimation means 11; and comparison means for comparing the reference value of the preset means with the output of the amplification means, and outputting a signal when the hot lump reaches the installation position of the hot lump detection head.
