Abstract
A process is described for preparing a multimetal oxide of the general formula I Aga-cQbMcV2Od*eH2O, where a, Q, b, M, c, d and e are each as defined in the description, by treating a vana-dium source with hydrogen peroxide source in aqueous solution and combining with a silver source and, if appropriate, sources of Q and/or M. The multimetal oxide can be converted to a silver vanadium oxide bronze which serves as the catalytically active composition for the gas phase partial oxidation of aromatic hydrocarbons to aldehydes carboxylic acids and/or carboxylic anhydrides.
