Disclosed are a method and apparatus for modifying a substance, the surface of the substance or an adherend or the like on the substance surface, wherein the substance is held in contact with a solution of nitrous oxide (N2O). Also disclosed is a product obtained by such a method and apparatus. Specifically disclosed is a method for modifying a substance X itself, the surface of the substance X or an adherend or the like on the surface of the substance X by irradiating a solution S of nitrous oxide which is in contact with the substance X with ultraviolet light. Also specifically disclosed are an apparatus for modifying a substance X by using such a modifying method, and a substance X modified by such a modification method or modification apparatus.
