Abstract

An improved infinite-variable-speed drive, which can be applicable to bicycles, is introduced. The main characteristic of this invention is to employ a friction drive as a power transmission and varying speed device between the pedal crank shaft and the driving sprocket. The key feature of the said friction drive is the use of a pair of conical friction wheels, one of which is fixed to the pedal crank shaft, and the other of which is simultaneously pivoted on the pedal crank shaft and joined to the driving sprocket. Then, several sliders and idle wheels are installed between the two conical friction wheels to make a friction drive mechanism works, whose principle is via the rolling (and frictional) contact between the two conical friction wheels and the idle wheels. At the same time, a screw mechanism with self-locking effect is adopted to infinitely (or continuously) adjust the rotational speed ratio between the two conical friction wheels. Besides, a linkage-type preloading mechanism is utilized to press the idle wheels on the two conical friction wheels to maintain sufficient frictional force for the said friction drive.
