Najmä pri konštrukcii ľahkých a ultra-ľahkých cigariet sa vzhľadom na veľmi dobré retenčné vlastnosti s obľubou používa papier. Proti obvykle používanému filtru z acetátu celulózy tkvie však veľká nevýhoda v tom, že papierovým filtrom sa mení chuť. Preto sa papierový filter nehodí ako monofilter, ale len ako tzv. dvojitý, duálny či viacnásobný filter v spojení s iným filtračným materiálom.
