Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for pretreating pulp, which is to be bleached with peroxide, by treating it with acid and by chelating. In particular, the purpose of the invention is to render more efficient, and at the same time simplify, the pretreatment which the peroxide bleaching requires. The process according to the invention is characterized in that the pulp is fed, at a consistency of 8-20%, into a pressurized acid tower 14 in which the pressure is 0-20 bar, preferably 1-10 bar and the temperature is 60-130 degree C, the pulp is treated in the acid tower 14 for 20-240 minutes, in order to decrease the kappa number and improve the bleachability, at a pH of 2-6, preferably at 3-4, the pulp is conveyed from the acid tower 14 to the chelating tower 24, the pulp is treated with complexing agent for at least 10-60 minutes at a pH of 4-7, preferably at 5-6, and the pulp is washed and/or pressed. <IMAGE>
