Abstract
A by-pass line 12 which by-passes the charge air cooler 9 is controlled by a valve 13 or 14, which is operable in dependence on temperature. The directional valve 13 or 14 is controlled by a temperature detector 15 which is disposed in or adjacent to a charge air or exhaust gas line 8, 4 or 3 of the engine 1. The valve may take various forms (Figs. 2 to 4) and the detector may be located in a chamber (23, Fig. 2) in the wall of the valve housing (16). <IMAGE>
